Doss earns first team honors while Alfano named to second team
AUSTIN, Texas – Xavier women's soccer seniors Tori Doss and Carly Alfano both collected another accolade on Thursday, earning selection to the 2017 Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team for NCAA DI, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Doss was named to the 11-person first team while Alfano earned second team honors.
"We are very proud and honored to have two student athletes being recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans," said Xavier head coach Nate Lie. "We are a program that focuses on achievement both on the field and in the classroom, and Tori and Carly exemplify the work ethic and character of Xavier Soccer."
The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The two were named to the First Team for District 5, which includes Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, which was voted on by the membership of CoSIDA.
Xavier is one of only three schools to have multiple student-athletes honored on this year's women's soccer team, joined by the United States Naval Academy and West Virginia with two each. It's the first time in Xavier women's soccer program history to have multiple student-athletes earn the honor, and the first time the Musketeers have had a first or second team honoree.
This year's honors are the first for the program since Marla Schuerman earned a spot on the 1992 Women's At-Large Third Team, the only previous time a Xavier women's soccer player has been honored. The 2017 honorees mark are the first for Xavier Athletics since 2012 when men's soccer player Sean Ryan earned Second Team honors for a second-straight year.
Xavier has had 24 student-athletes earn Academic All-American honors.
During her time at Xavier Doss posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.98 in her undergraduate studies and graduated last May with a double major in Biology and Chemistry. She deferred her enrollment in medical school at Ohio State to play a fifth year at Xavier. In that year, Doss helped lead the Musketeers to the program's first conference tournament appearance since 2003 and earned BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team honors.
Doss led the 2017 squad on offense during conference play, tallying a team-high seven points, matching Sydney Schembri for team-high in conference play with three goals, and picking up an assist.
Doss scored two game winners in BIG EAST play for winning conference record for the first time since 2005. Doss tallied the game winner against Providence for the 1-0 win in the first result against the Friars since joining the BIG EAST. The Indianapolis native also scored the game-winner late in the 2-1 win over Seton Hall that secured the Musketeers' bid to the BIG EAST Championship.
Doss finished the season with 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists.
Doss' fifth year caps a standout career for the native of Indianapolis, Ind. As a freshman and sophomore, she led the team on offense, scoring 13 points on four goals and five assists as a freshman, and finished her sophomore campaign with seven points on three goals.
As a junior, she posted two goals and two assists in the first two games of the season before eventually redshirting. As a senior, Doss tallied eight points on four goals, despite playing with injury.
Doss was also one of four finalists nationally for the John Wooden Citizenship Cup Award last spring, based on her work in the community, as well as her academic and athletic accomplishments. Doss also earned Academic All-BIG EAST four times.
Currently in her senior year, Alfano has posted a perfect grade point average of 4.00 while studying Biology, with double minors in Chemistry and Deaf Studies. The native of Belle River, Ontario, Canada, intends to pursue medical school after graduation.
On the field, Alfano led the 2017 Musketeers in minutes played with over 1800 for the season, anchoring the Xavier defense as middle back.
The Xavier backline held all-nine BIG EAST opponents to one goal or fewer during the conference regular season, helping earn the program's first BIG EAST Championship bid since joining the conference and the first post-season appearances since 2003. All told, Xavier's defense forced four shutouts on the season.
Alfano's efforts earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Third Team for 2017.
Prior to her senior season, Alfano established herself as an anchor on the backline, starting in 17 games as a junior to tally over 1,400 minutes. Alfano also recorded an assist in 2016.
As a sophomore, Alfano totaled 1,471 minutes in 18 appearances, including 17 starts. During the 2015 season, she played all but eight minutes in BIG EAST action. As a freshman, she played nearly 900 minutes, making eight starts in 17 appearances, and took seven shots on goal.
Alfano is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree and was named Academic All-Ohio First Team in 2015.
