Penn State got to the bullpen for six after a brilliant start by senior lefty Greg Jacknewitz

CARY, N.C. - Greg Jacknewitz limited Penn State to two hits and struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings on Sunday, but the Nittany Lions got to the XU bullpen for six runs in the eighth inning to salvage a series split with a 6-1 win at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Sunday.

Xavier has now split both of its weekend series to begin the year and stands at 4-4 heading into a three-game set at Charlotte. First pitch of the weekend will come Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m.

PSU improved to 2-5 with the win.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Matt Fallon moved up the order to the leadoff spot and responded with a 2-for-5 game, scoring XU's lone run in the eighth inning.
• Rylan Bannon went 0-for-3 with a walk, a hitless day in an otherwise superlative weekend. The junior third baseman hit .500 (8-for-16) in the series overall, scoring five times and knocking in eight. He had three doubles, a triple and two home runs in the series.
• Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-3), Conor Grammes (1-for-4, RBI), Sam Flamini (1-for-4) and Ethan Schmidt (1-for-3) also collected hits for Xavier.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Greg Jacknewitz struck out a career-high 13 batters, limiting Penn State to just two hits in seven dominant frames. The senior lefty tied a career-high with the seven innings and was the first XU pitcher to record double-digit strikeouts since Trent Astle had 10 at Lipscomb on March 22, 2015.
• The program record for strikeouts in a game is 17, which has happened twice before (1997 and 1964).
• Sully Stadler made his XU debut in the eighth inning, but was forced out of the game after getting just one out.
• Jason Hall was the third pitcher used in the eighth, getting the final two outs.

HOW XU SCORED

EIGHTH INNING: Matt Fallon reached on an infield single, moving to third on a single to right by Joe Gellenbeck. Fallon then scored on a double to left by Conor Grammes.

• Xavier returns to the diamond next weekend for three games at former Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte. First pitch in the series is scheduled for Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
