Musketeers return to BIG EAST action this weekend, hosting Butler for three at Hayden Field
CINCINNATI – A big sixth inning lifted Miami (OH) past Xavier baseball, 12-6, on Wednesday at Marge Schott Stadium in the title game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic.
XU was appearing in the Joe Nuxhall Classic Championship for the first time since 2009 after a 9-1 win over UC on Tuesday.
The win drops XU to 21-17 overall, while the RedHawks improve to 15-23 with a seventh straight win.
• XU had a double digit hit total for the fifth time in seven games, collecting 10 hits.
• Matt Fallon continued to produce, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. In his last four games, the senior center fielder is 7-for-12 (.583) with two homers, eight runs scored and six RBI.
• Joe Gellenbeck also had a second straight multi-hit day, recording a 3-for-5 line with a run scored and two RBI.
• Blaine Griffiths (0-for-3) saw a five game hitting streak snapped, but worked his seventh walk in his last five games.
• Mitch Gallagher (1-for-5, 2 R), Rylan Bannon (1-for-3), Conor Grammes (1-for-4, R) and Chris Givin (1-for-3, RBI) also contributed hits for XU.
• Bannon now leads XU with a 13 game reached base streak.
• Will LaRue went 1-for-1 with three walks and his 18th stolen base of the year. LaRue is now batting .343 (24-for-70) over his last 22 games.
• Conor Grammes (1-for-4, RBI), Mitch Gallagher (1-for-4, R, RBI) and Nate Soria (1-for-4, R) also contributed hits for XU.
• Chris Givin walked twice and knocked in a run despite going hitless.
• The Musketeers worked seven walks as a team and have had a base on balls in all 38 games this season.
• Trent Astle lasted 3.1 innings in his start, allowing four earned runs and striking out three.
• Taylor Williams (2-2) got the loss, running into trouble in the fifth inning.
• Matt Kent pitched a clean seventh inning, striking out one and working around a hit.
• Sully Stadler made his first appearance since March 11 in the eighth, allowing a run but getting out of a jam on a double play.
• Conor Grammes allowed a pair of hits and a run in the ninth.
FIRST INNING: Mitch Gallagher singled and Joe Gellenbeck doubled to right to open the game before Rylan Bannon was plunked to load the bases. Chris Givin was then hit by a pitch to bring a run across for XU.
SECOND INNING: Will LaRue singled up the middle and stole second, coming around to score on a single through the right side by Matt Fallon. With two outs, Joe Gellenbeck doubled to right field to bring Fallon home. Later, on a double steal, a throwing error by the catcher brought Gellenbeck home to make it 4-3.
FIFTH INNING: Conor Grammes and Chris Givin opened the inning with back-to-back singles before a pair of strikeouts nearly got Miami out of the inning. With two outs, Will LaRue worked a walk to load the bases and Matt Fallon followed with another to push across the tying run.
EIGHTH INNING: Will LaRue led off with a walk before before being erased on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Joe Gellenbeck launched a double to the corner in left, bringing Gallagher all the way around from first.
• XU returns home on Friday, continuing BIG EAST action against Butler. First pitch in the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Hayden Field.
