Samantha Dewey Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Junior forward scored a pair in 3-2 win over Cleveland State
NEW YORK - After the first weekend of play, Xavier women's soccer's Samantha Dewey was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll by the conference office on Monday. Dewey, a native of Fairland, Ind., scored a pair in Xavier's 3-2 win in the season-opener against Cleveland State on Friday evening at the XU Soccer Complex.
After 62 scoreless minutes against CSU, Jessica Miller brought the ball up the field, playing to the right corner. Miller passed to Dewey on the right side of the net, and the junior worked the ball across the penalty box and buried it in the left corner.
Dewey struck again in the 70th minute on a similar set-up from Emma Westwater, who crossed to Dewey from the right side of the net. Dewey finished from in front of the goal to put the Musketeers up 2-0.
Both goals proved to be critical when, after a tally from Sydney Schembri put the Musketeers up 3-0 minutes later, Cleveland State responded with a pair of goals in the closing minutes of the match.
This is Dewey's fourth time being honored on the Weekly Honor Roll. The preseason All-Conference selection was also named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week three times.
Xavier returns to action on Friday, August 25 when the Musketeers host Ball State in the first game of a double-header with the men's squad. First touch at XU Soccer Complex is set for 4:30 p.m for the women. The men will take on Loyola Chicago at 7:30 p.m.
