Musketeers score three times, outshoot Bulldogs 25-5 en route to first win

CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer picked up its first win of the 2017 season, dominating visiting Drake on Sunday at the XU Soccer Complex in a 3-0 win.

The Musketeers (1-1) rebounded from an overtime loss in Friday's opener to outshoot the Bulldogs 25-5 and also held a 9-3 edge in corners.

Josh Grant and Jacob Goodall both supplied two assists in the game. Goodall has now assisted on three of Xavier's four goals this season, while Grant turned in his second multi-assist match in his career.

XU dominated the run of play early, finally breaking through for multiple goals in less than a two minute span midway through the first half.

Matt Vasquenza capped the game with his first goal of the season, giving XU a 3-0 lead after ripping off a team-high six shots in the match.

HOW THEY SCORED

• 30' | XAVIER 1-0 | Cameron Taylor found the back of the net on a header for the second time this season, taking in a cross from Jacob Goodall and putting it through on the left side of the frame. Simen Hestnes was also credited with an assist on the sequence, grabbing a rebound and launching a ball to the right side of the box to set up the pass from Goodall.
• 31' | XAVIER 1-0 | Samson Sergi squared away a centering pass from the left side of the box by Jacob Goodall, pushing a shot just left of the Drake keeper for his second career goal.
• 61' | XAVIER 1-0 | Matt Vasquenza finished off a centering pass from Josh Grant off a turnover, tapping it in for his first goal of the fall.

Xavier hits the road for its next three matches, heading to the Boston area this coming weekend for matchups against Harvard and Boston College. XU faces Harvard on Friday, Sept. 1 at 4:30 p.m. and remains in town to face off with BC on Monday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
