Musketeers Fall in Overtime to No. 8 Auburn in Maui

Xavier returns to action in Maui Jim Maui Invite tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
MAUI – A late 5-0 run propelled the Xavier Musketeers into overtime with No. 8 Auburn in the opening game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, but the Tigers pulled away in the final three minutes of overtime to give Xavier the 88-79 setback in the opening game of the Invite. Five Musketeers scored in double figures, led by 17 points for Ryan Welage.

FIRST HALF |
- Auburn early, going up by as many as four in the first eight minutes, before a pair of three pointers from Ryan Welage and Naji Marshall put Xavier ahead, 10-9, with 12:34 remaining in the first half.
- The Tigers inched back ahead, and the teams traded possessions until a 5-0 run put Xavier up three, 17-14, with just over eight remaining before halftime.
- Auburn put together a 5-0 run of its own to retake the lead, outscoring Xavier 18-3 over the next five minutes to push out to a 12-point lead, 32-20, with under three minutes to play.
- Seven points from Welage over the final two minutes fueled an 8-1 run for the Musketeers to close out the half, cutting the deficit to five, 33-28, at the break.
- Welage's 10 points led the Musketeers in the first half.
- Tyrique Jones grabbed a team-high six boards with five points on 2-of-2 shooting from the floor.
- Auburn turned nine Xavier turnovers into 16 points, to just five points off six miscues for the Musketeers.
- Xavier shot 35 percent from the field but grabbed 10 offensive boards to outscore Auburn 11-3 on second-chance points.

SECOND HALF |
- A basket and a free throw for Quentin Goodin to open the second half extended the run to 11-1, pulling Xavier to within two, 33-31.
- The Tigers scored nine straight points over the next three minutes to extend its lead to 11, 42-31.
- After AU led 45-34 with 16 minutes to play, the Musketeers outscored the Tigers 12-5 over the next three minutes to pull back within four 50-46 with 12 minutes to play.
- Xavier climbed to within one, 64-63, with just under seven minutes.
- Auburn pushed the lead back out to as many as five, but Xavier scored five unanswered to close the game, tying it up at 77-77 as the second half ended to send the game to overtime.
- Quentin Goodin scored 13 points in the second half and Paul Scruggs added 10.
- Xavier shot 50 percent from the floor, including 6-of-12 from behind the arc.

- After two scoreless minutes, Auburn took a three point lead in overtime.
- Paul Scruggs' cut the lead back to one, 80-79, with two minutes to play.
- The Tigers closed out the game on an 8-0 run to set the final score at 88-79.
