Baseball Wins Slugfest at Eastern Kentucky, 22-14

Xavier clubbed five homers in the affair, including a first career grand slam by Sam Flamini, as the two teams combined for 36 runs and 34 hits.Â
The Musketeers improved to 10-17Â with the win, while Eastern Kentucky fell to 12-17 overall.

 XU AT THE PLATE |
• Xavier scored a season-high 22 runs on the strength of five homers and a season-high 23 hits.
• XU has just two multi-homer games this season, but the Musketeers have hit eight and five homers in those games.
• XU scored in double digits for the third time this season.
• The 22 runs were the most for the Musketeers since XU scored 22 against Fairleigh Dickinson on March 31, 2017.
• Sam Flamini was 2-for-6 with a grand slam in the fifth inning, the first of his career. The junior finished with a pair of runs scored and four RBI.
• Matt Warkentin led the way offensively, going a season-best 5-for-6 with four runs scored, a steal, a homer and three RBI.
• Joe Gellenbeck also had a big day, going 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored, a homer and five RBI.Â
• Chris Givin was 3-for-5 from the two spot, scoring four times and driving in four more while walking twice. The junior had a double and a triple to go with two stolen bases.
• Allbry Major also had three hits on the day, going 3-for-6 with a run scored, a steal and an RBI.
• Conor Grammes was 2-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI, all coming on a two-run homer in the fifth.
• Ryan Altenberger scored a season-high four runs and stole two bases, despite going 1-for-7 on the day.
• Nate Soria added a homer as part of a 1-for-3 day with two runs scored, two RBI and a walk.
• Natale Monastra (1-for-5, 2 R) and Andrew Sexton (1-for-2) also collected hits for XU.

• Freshman Nick Zwack got the start and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing six runs, but just one earned, while striking out six.Â
• Senior Christian Glass picked up the win (1-0), tossing 1.1 innings and striking out one while surrendering four earned runs.
• Freshman Evan Miller tossed two innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out one.
• Freshman Griffin Lanoue closed out the game, firing two innings of one-run relief and striking out two.

 HOW XU SCORED |
FIFTH INNING | Matt Warkentin led off with a single to center before Nate Soria homered to left field to get XU on the scoreboard. After a fly out by Sam Flamini, Ryan Altenberger doubled to right center and came around to score on a triple to left center by Chris Givin. Joe Gellenbeck wouldConor Grammesring XU within two on a single to right field to score Givin. Conor Grammes then tied the game at 6-6 with a two-run bomb to left field, prompting a pitching change by EKU. After the second out of the inning, Natale Monastra was hit by a pitch and went to third on a single to left by Matt Warkentin. A walk of Nate Soria would then load the bases for Sam Flamini, who homered on a 1-2 pitch for his first career grand slam and a 10-6 Xavier lead. After another pitching change, Ryan Altenberger reached on an error and stole second before a Chris Givin double to left center brought him home. Joe Gellenbeck finished off the scoring in the inning with a two-run homer down the right field line, making it 13-6.
SIXTH INNING | Allbry Major led off with a single through the right side, going to third on a double down the left field line by Natale Monastra. Matt Warkentin followed with a single through the left side to score both Monastra and Major to make it 13-10. With two outs, Warkentin came home on a fielding error. Chris Givin then walked and Joe Gellenbeck doubled up the middle to bring home Givin and Ryan Altenberger to give XU an 18-10 lead.
EIGHTH INNING | Sam Flamini led off with a single through the left side, going to second on an error as Ryan Altenberger reached. After a steal of second by Altenberger, ChrAllbry Majorgled to center to bring home both runners and make it 20-13. Givin would later come around to score on a single through the right side by Allbry Major.
NINTH INNINGÂ | Matt Warkentin led off the inning with a solo homer to center on an 0-1 pitch.
