Musketeers now 1-0-1 with a pair of shutouts after opening weekend
CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer dominated possession, but could not find the net in a 0-0 double overtime draw at Northwestern on Sunday evening at Martin Stadium.
Xavier took a 10-2 advantage in corners and outshot Northwestern 22-3, but could not cash in on several dangerous opportunities including a late clearance off the line in double overtime.
The shutout was the second straight for Xavier, which did not allow the Wildcats to muster much of an attack all evening. Goalkeeper Zachary Nelson picked up his second shutout of the season without having to make a save.
Tomek Pauer and Matt Nance led XU with four shots apiece, while Payton Miller had the team's best look at the net in the first half with a header taken away by the Northwestern keeper.
With the road result, Xavier moves to 1-0-1 after opening weekend. Northwestern also goes to 1-0-1 with the tie.

"It was disappointing to not get a goal, but we checked several early-season boxes including being strong defensively again despite not finishing several scoring opportunities. We may have missed Sam Sergi a bit, but nonetheless we should have been able to put a very stingy team away. After what's been a smooth three weeks our guys hit their first bump in the road tonight and I think it well serve us well as we get back to work in building what I think is a very good team capable of great things."
• Zachary Nelson played the full match and came away with a second straight shutout in goal. The redshirt sophomore did not have to make a save in the match, as Northwestern mustered just three shots.
• XU has allowed just four shots in two matches to start the season, outshooting its opposition 48-4.
• The Musketeers now hold a 16-3 edge in corner kicks against their opposition this season.
• Xavier has not allowed a goal during the regular season and has played six straight scoreless halves going back to its final exhibition, a 0-0 draw against preseason No. 7 Michigan State.
• 11 different players took a shot for XU. Payton Miller had a pair of shots on goal to lead the team, while Tomek Pauer and Simen Hestnes were each also credited with one shot on goal apiece.
• Head coach Andy Fleming moved to 93-48-25 since taking over at Xavier and remains seven wins from the 100-win plateau.
