Musketeers have not allowed a goal in 310 minutes of play to open season
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Xavier men's soccer continued a season-opening shutout streak, bending but not breaking in a 0-0 road draw against Oregon State on Friday evening at Lorenz Field.
The shutout was the third straight for Xavier as goalkeeper Zachary Nelson, playing before a local crowd, picked up his third shutout of the season. The redshirt sophomore from West Linn, Ore. made four saves in the match to keep the clean sheet, despite facing some pressure in the latter half of the match.
Oregon State led the match in shots (19-6) and corner kicks (12-3).
Samson Sergi made his season debut and contributed four shots off the bench to tie for a match high, while Simen Hestnes and Derrick Otim also contributed shots for XU.
With the road result, Xavier goes to 1-0-2 overall on the young season. Oregon State moves to 1-1-1 with the tie.
• The Musketeers will be back at home in a week to face Cincinnati in the annual "Crosstown Derby" on Friday, Sept. 7 at XU Soccer Complex. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

"I felt like we did well to get another shutout and a road result against a Pac 12 team, a team which was more athletic than us and played very well. I think we looked a bit rusty at times and certainly the travel showed a bit, but nonetheless we were in a position to win the game late in regulation and overtime and are a very good team."
"It was good to get Sam Sergi, our returning scoring leader, onto the field for the first time and we will sharpen up some parts of our restarts, services and decisions in the final third. I am proud of our fight and resiliency tonight. We are en route to being elite defensively and will emerge on the offensive side any day now. A great opportunity awaits us at home Friday against a hungry UC team in the Cincinnati Derby. We are very close to putting all of the phases together."
• Zachary Nelson played the full match and came away with a third straight shutout in goal. The redshirt sophomore made four saves.
• XU was outshot for the first time this season after allowing just four shots in its first two matches.
• The Musketeers are still out-shooting opponents 54-20 to start the season.
• Xavier has not allowed a goal during the regular season and has played eight straight scoreless halves going back to its final exhibition, a 0-0 draw against preseason No. 7 Michigan State.
• Head coach Andy Fleming moved to 93-48-26 since taking over at Xavier and remains seven wins from the 100-win plateau.
