Red-shirt senior midfielder second Musketeer to earn All-American honors
CINCINNATI - Red-shirt senior Samantha Dewey added another honor to cap off her outstanding Xavier career, earning a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team after leading Xavier on offense during a 2019 campaign that rewrote the program record book.
Dewey, a midfielder/forward from Fairland, Ind., started in all 23 matches for the Musketeers, leading the squad on offense with 30 points on 13 goals, including four game-winners, as well as four assists. Her 13-goal senior season will go as the fourth most in a single season in program history while the team's 43 goals scored are the second most in program history. Dewey was a unanimous selection to the 2019 All-BIG EAST First Team and was named to the USC All-East Region First Team after leading the Musketeers on offense as the program posted a record-breaking season, winning its first regular season conference title, first BIG EAST Tournament Championship and first NCAA Tournament match with a program-best 17 wins.
Dewey has been a major offensive threat throughout her Xavier career, leading the Musketeers on offensive in each of her four full seasons and earning All-BIG EAST honors following each of those seasons. She finished her career with 103 points on 40 goals and 23 assists. She was also named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and earned a spot on the USC All-East Region Third Team following the 2018 season.
Dewey was also honored this season with a spot on the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Dewey was named to the First Team for District 5, which includes Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. Dewey graduated with a degree in Exercise Science from Xavier in May 2019, posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.34 for her undergraduate degree. She is currently working on a M. Ed in Sport Administration, with a GPA of 3.67 through her work in the program so far.
In addition to her work in the classroom and on the field, Dewey was also honored for her work in the community, earning a spot on the 2019 Senior CLASS Award® Second Team for women's collegiate soccer. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Each candidate has displayed a strong work ethic in the classroom and on the pitch. Outside of academics and athletics, all candidates also have been consistently involved in community service on their campus or in their communities.
Dewey's selection to the USC All-America Third Team is the second such honor for a Musketeer. She joins Xavier Hall of Famer Amanda Gruber ('98) as the only Musketeers to earn All-America Honors from the coaches' association. Gruber was also named Third Team All-America in 1997 by then-NSCA following a senior season in which she scored a program record 24 goals, and collected 59 points, also a program record.
