Baseball Drops Season Opener at No. 7 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Xavier baseball began its 2019 season with a 12-3 loss at No. 7 North Carolina on Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
The Musketeers loaded the bases in each of the first two innings and tied the game at 3-3 before North Carolina scored nine unanswered runs to take control of the game.
Xavier was aggressive on the base paths, swiping four bags, and patient at the plate while drawing six walks. The big hit did not come all game, however, as XU stranded 14 runners overall.
• Xavier returns to action for game two against the Tar Heels on Saturday at 2 p.m.
• Conor Grammes went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The junior also stole a base and reached on a hit by pitch.
• Ryan Altenberger also produced a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. The second baseman also stole a pair of bases in his 2019 debut.
• Allbry Major (1-for-4, R, BB) and Jake Shepski (1-for-4, RBI, BB) also provided hits for XU.
• Junior Conor Grammes was wild in his 2019 debut, lasting 3.2 innings and allowing five earned runs while walking four. The righty struck out two before bowing out in the fourth inning.
• Grad student Damien Richard came on in relief, giving XU three innings but also struggling with control. The righty allowed four earned runs and walked four, while striking out a pair.
• Sophomore Evan Miller got the final out of the seventh, walking a pair and allowing one earned run.
• Sophomore Trevor Olson tossed a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one walk and striking out one Tar Heel.

Andrew Sexton sacrifice bunted both runners over and Chris Givin was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the second straight inning. Jake Shepski then reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Altenberger.
THIRD INNING | Conor Grammes was plunked to lead off the frame, going to second on a one out walk by Allbry Major. After a double steal, Natale Monastra reached on an error to bring both runners home. He was credited with one RBI on the play as XU tied the game at 3-3.
