Givin Collects Six Hits, Xavier Baseball Falls in Series Finale at Grand Canyon

The game took 4:12 to complete and saw XU lead 10-5 going into the sixth before Grand Canyon rallied for 16 runs. Xavier responded with eight runs in the eighth inning and left the bases loaded in the ninth, falling in a wild game to wrap up the series.
XU returns to action for one more date on its spring break trip, playing New Mexico State on Sunday with a 2 p.m. ET first pitch scheduled. The game will be held at Camelback Ranch, the spring training home of the White Sox and Dodgers.Â
Xavier dropped to 6-11 overall with the loss. Grand Canyon improved to 9-10 and clinched the series with three wins in four games.

 XU AT THE PLATE |
• Xavier collected a season-high 18 runs, topping double digits for the second time this season, and also had a season-high 24 hits. Nine different players had a hit in the affair.
• Senior Chris Givin had a career day, going 6-for-7 (.857) with a double, triple, three runs scored and three runs driven in.
• Givin's triple was the 10th of his career, moving him into fifth-place all-time in XU program history.
• Givin finished the series 12-for-20 (.600) with four runs scored and four RBI, lifting his season batting average from .264 all the way to .356.
• Freshman Luke Stephenson had a massive day in his third career start, going 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI to go with his first career homer. He also got his first collegiate hit in the game.
• Allbry Major was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, an RBI and two doubles. The sophomore also walked twice.
• Junior Conor Grammes went 3-for-7 with a run scored and two RBI.
• Ryan Altenberger (2-for-6, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Jake Shepski (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI) also had multi-hit efforts for XU.
• Matt Warkentin was 1-for-6 with a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly. He leads XU with four longballs on the year.

 XU ON THE MOUND |
• Sophomore Griffin Lanoue made the start and lasted three innings and allowing four earned runs.
• Senior Trey Schramm struck out a pair, but allowed four earned runs in two innings of work.
• Senior Chris Givin made his first appearance on the mound this season, giving XU 2.1 innings and striking out one.
• Luke Franzoni made his collegiate debut on the mound, getting the final two outs of the game.

 HOW THEY SCORED |
FIRST INNING | With two outs, Allbry Major singled to center before coming around to score on a double to right by Ryan Altenberger. Jake Shepski followed with a double to left to give XU an early 2-0 lead.
THIRD INNING |Â Allbry Major led off with a double to right center, advancing to third on a ground out and scoring via a sacrifice fly by Matt Warkentin.
FOURTH INNING | Luke Stephenson led off the inning with his first career home run, tagging one out to left. Chris Givin then delivered a one out double to center, scoring on a base hit by Conor Grammes. Batting next, Allbry Major doubled to center before coming home on a RBI ground out by Ryan Altenberger.
FIFTH INNING | Jack Housinger led off with a walk, moving to second on a single by Luke Stephenson and going to third when a walk of Kody Darcy loaded the bases. Chris Givin followed with a big blow, tripling to to right center to give XU a 9-4 lead. Conor Grammes then singled up the middle to bring Givin home and give XU double digits.
EIGHTH INNING | With one out, Luke Stephenson started a rally with a single through the left side. Kody Darcy was hit by a pitch and Chris Givin followed with a single to load the bases for Allbry Major, who walked to push one across. Ryan Altenberger then reached on an error to bring home another. Jake Shepski followed with a two-run double to left center before a three-run homer by Matt Warkentin made it a 21-17 game. XU would get one more in the inning as Luke Stephenson doubled in Jack Housinger to make it a three run deficit.
