Damien Richard pitches career-long seven innings in first start of season

AUSTIN, Texas - After forcing extra innings, Xavier baseball took the lead twice in extra frames at Texas, but each time the No. 13 Longhorns responded, taking the walk-off 6-5 win in the 12th inning in Austin, Texas on Friday evening.

Texas jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring on the only two hits allowed by starter Damien Richard in his seven-inning start. Xavier responded in the eighth to tie the game at two and send the game to extra innings. Xavier took a one run lead in the bottom of the 10th, but UT responded to extend the game. The Musketeers scored a pair in the 12th, but a three run inning for the Longhorns gave UT the 6-5 win.

The Musketeers and Longhorns return to the field tomorrow at 6:30 PM ET for the second of three games.

XU AT THE PLATE

Jake Shepski went 3-of-5 a the plate and collected three RBI, both matching his season highs.
Allbry Major went 1-of-3 at the plate and collected a pair of walks.
Ryan Altenberger went 1-of-3 with a walk and collected an RBI. Altenberger was one of five different Musketeers to score a run.
Chris Givin and Jack Housinger each went 1-of-5 at the plate, collected a walk and scored a run.
Matt Warkentin and Natale Monastra each collected a hit.
Xavier had nine hits and six walks on the night.

XU ON THE MOUND

Damien Richard pitched seven innings in his first start of the season, a career-long outing where he faced just five over the minimum, allowing just two runs on three hits with two walks. Richard sat the Longhorns down in order in four innings.
Lane Flamm came in in the eighth inning, pitching four innings allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and just one walk.
Trevor Olson came in in the 12th inning, facing the final batter and allowing one hit.

HOW THEY SCORED

SEVENTH INNING | Chris Givin led off the inning with a walk. A Jack Housinger single and Allbry Major walk loaded the bases with one out. After UT switched pitchers, Ryan Altenberger was hit by a pitch to bring in Givin, cutting the Texas lead to one, 2-1. With the bases still loaded, Jake Shepski hit a sac fly to left field to send Housinger home to tie the game, 2-2.

TENTH INNING | With one out, Major walked, then stole second base. A wild pitch sent Major to third and another wild pitch brought Major home to put Xavier ahead, 3-2.

TWELFTH INNING | Jack Housinger and Conor Grammes led off the inning with walks. A sac bunt by Major put both Housinger and Grammes in scoring position. Ryan Altenberger reached on a fielder's choice, with Housinger thrown out at home. Jake Shepski singled to bring in two runs, putting Xavier ahead, 5-3.
