Conor Grammes' career high in strikeouts helps Xavier in shutout victory over Hoyas

CINCINNATI - In the series finale against Georgetown, a walk-off double from Allbry Major scored Conor Grammes, securing Xavier's 1-0 victory over the Hoyas in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The Musketeers swept the Hoyas going 3-0 on the BIG EAST opening series.

After eight and a half scoreless innings, Conor Grammes connected on a single through the left side. Allbry Major doubled down the right field line, advancing Grammes around the bases to put the Musketeers up 1-0.

Conor Grammes made his eighth start this season, finishing the game with a career high of 16 strikeouts. Grammes' 16 strikeouts is tied for second most strikeouts in a single game this season in the NCAA DI, and ties for most in a single game in the BIG EAST with Jack Cushing, who made the start for the Hoyas today. Grammes was one strikeout shy of tying Xavier's record of 17 strikeouts in a game, which is currently held by Bill Peters in 1997 and Bob Thorn in 1964.

Xavier improves its record to 12-19 and 3-0 BIG EAST.

XU AT THE PLATE

Allbry Major came up big in the ninth inning with a walk-off double to secure the victory. Major went 3-4 on the day and collected a walk. Major's hitting streak is at six games.
Jack Housinger finished 1-3 and drew a walk to get aboard for a fourth-straight game.
Ryan Altenberger contributed a hit, ending the game hitting 1-3, extending his on-base streak to 14.
Matt Warkentin finished the day going 1-4, bringing his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 13.
Conor Grammes connected in the ninth inning to get aboard for Allbry Major's game-winning double to extend his on-base streak to 15 games.
Luke Franzoni went 1-4 at the plate, collecting a hit for a fourth-straight game.

XU ON THE MOUND

Conor Grammes started the series finale for the Musketeers, striking out eight of the first nine batters faced. Grammes finished the day with a career-high 16 strikeouts through a season-high seven innings.
Nick Zwack took the mound in the eighth inning, striking out three batters, only giving up one hit.
Grammes and Zwack combined for a total 19 strikeouts, a Xavier season high.

HOW THEY SCORED

NINTH INNING | Grammes singled with one out to get aboard. With two outs, Allbry Major set a walk-off double down the right field line, with Grammes taking three base and beating out the throw to home to give Xavier the 1-0 win.
