Men's Soccer Knocks Off No. 2/3 Akron to Open 2019 Season

The Musketeers shutout the Zips, 2-0, on Friday Night
CINCINNATIÂ -Â Xavier men's soccer opened the 2019 season with a 2-0 win over No. 2/3 Akron at the XU Soccer Complex on Friday night. The Musketeers moved to 8-2-2 against top-10 opponents since the 2010 season following the win.

12' | XAVIER |Â Freshman Karsen Henderlong scored the first goal of his career with header 10 yards out from the Akron goalkeeper. The ball was played in from the left by Payton Miller who picked up his first assist of the season.
77' | XAVIER | Senior Samson Sergi sealed the victory with a header off a deflected ball played into the box.

• The Musketeers moved to 8-2-2 against top-10 opponents since the 2010 season following the win. Xavier also moved to 5-3-2 in season openers under head coach Andy Fleming.Â
• The win over No. 2/3 Akron was the highest ranked win over an opponent at the XU Soccer Complex. Xavier posted wins over the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country on the road during the 2015 season.
• Senior Samson Sergi now has 20 career goals at Xavier. The forward has posted back-to-back nine-goal seasons after finding the back of the net once as a freshman.Â
• Matthew Rosenberg (1-0) made six saves in goal in his first career start with the Musketeers. The redshirt-junior has now posted eight career shutouts during his college career (transfer from Central Florida).
• Akron posted nine more shots (16-7) than Xavier on the night and had four more fouls (12-8). The Musketeers had one more corner kick (7-6) than the Zips.

• Xavier returns to action on Monday, Sept. 2 against Eastern Illinois. First touch is set for 7 p.m. from the XU Soccer Complex.
