Musketeers win 24-15 in a hit parade

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY - Xavier baseball took their bats across the Ohio River to come back and beat Northern Kentucky 24-15 in a shootout. Luke Franzoni got the Musketeers on the board with a solo home run to center in the first, but Northern Kentucky responded with seven in the home half. Not to be out done, the Musketeers scored eight in the 2nd, and added four in the 4th to retake control. The teams traded blows for the remainder of the game and Northern Kentucky got within one, but Xavier pulled away to take a commanding 24-15 victory.

Next, the Musketeers will travel to California for a three-game series against Long Beach State starting on Friday, March 6 at 9:00 p.m. ET

XU AT THE PLATE

Jack Housinger extended his hit streak to six games with a 1-3 day in the leadoff spot with an RBI and two runs.
Luke Franzoni was 3-5 with two home runs, five RBIs and four runs.
Natale Monastra was 3-5 with four runs, two walks and a double.
Ryan Altenberger hit cleanup and blasted a homer as part of a five-RBI day.
Garrett Schultz was 3-4 with a home run and four runs.
Andrew Walker had the biggest swing of the day, a grand slam in the 2nd to give Xavier the 9-7 lead that they wouldn't surrender as part of a four-RBI, three-run day.
Eddie Rivero went 1-3 with an RBI and a run.
Luke Stephenson tallied two RBIs and two runs with a double.
Kody Darcy didn't start, but he came in and went 1-3 with a solo home run in the 9th.
Andrew Sexton pinch-hit in the 9th and hit a two-RBI double for Xavier 23rd and 24th runs of the day.

XU ON THE MOUND

Jack Lynch relieved Trevor Olson in the first and pitched a clean 2.1 innings with three strikeouts, no runs and allowing only two hits.
Evan Miller pitched 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and getting a strikeout.
Sam Czabala earned the win with 1.1 innings of work and striking out two.
Xander Rojahn recorded three strikeouts in 2.1 innings while only allowing two hits.
Trey Schramm pitched a clean 9th inning to secure the victory.

HOW THEY SCORED

1st INNING | Luke Franzoni hit a solo home run to straight-away center to give Xavier the early lead.

2nd INNING | Franzoni started things in the second with a two-out two-RBI single to left. Ryan Altenberger followed with a two-out two-strike two-RBI single two right. Last but not least, Andrew Walker cleared the bases with a grand slam to cap off the eight-run inning.

4th INNING | Eddie Rivero hit a sac fly with runners on the corners to extend the lead, then Lane Flamm pinch-hit and reached on an error to pick up two-RBIs. Housinger finished the inning with the 12th unanswered run by hitting an RBI single to right.

5th INNING | Luke Franzoni hti a two-RBI double to give Xavier the lead at 15-8.

7th INNING | Garrett Shultz hit a solo homer to center to give Xavier a two-run lead.

8th INNING | Ryan Altenberger hit a three-run homer to right to give Xavier a four-run cushion late in the ball game.

9th INNING | Kody Darcy hit a solo home run, followed by a walk and a two-run shot for Luke Franzoni, his second of the day. Then, Andrew Sexton had a pinch-hit double to give Xavier the 24-15 lead.
