Sonia Vargas earns a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll
NEW YORK - Following a two-win weekend that clinched the 2021 BIG EAST regular season title for No. 17 Xavier women's soccer, a pair of Musketeers picked up weekly honor from the league offices on Monday. Ella Rogers was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while Sonia Vargas earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.
In a match with plenty of postseason implications, Rogers, originally from Granville, Ohio, came up clutch, scoring the game-winning goal for Xavier as the Musketeers defeated Butler 2-1 on Thursday. Rogers struck in the 59 minute, marking her fourth goal of the season and second of the game-winning variety. The midfielder also helped Xavier maintain possession throughout its two contests last week as the Musketeers outshot the Bulldogs and UConn by a combined 31-21 margin, including 14-8 on goal.
Vargas, a sophomore forward from Hilliard, Ohio, finished the week with three points, after picking up an assist on Chloe Netzel's first half goal in the 2-1 win against Butler and then scoring the game winner in Xavier's 1-0 win against UConn to clinch the league title. Vargas now has seven points on three assists and two goals, both game-winners.
Xavier will next be in action in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday, November 4, at Corcoran Field. The Musketeers will face the winner of the first round game between the No. 4 seed and No. 5 seed.
