Trevor Olson pitches 6.2 innings of one-run baseball, striking out eight

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Xavier baseball opened up the four-game series at Evansville with a 6-1 win on Friday evening, moving the Musketeers to 6-9 on the season.

The game went to the third inning in a 1-1 tie, but Xavier would go ahead for good on an Andrew Walker homer in the third, the only run the Musketeers would need the rest of the way. Xavier added a pair of insurance runs in each the seventh and the ninth but Xavier's pitching didn't allow another Purple Ace run, setting the final score at 6-1. Trevor Olson picked up the win for a second-straight series opener after allowing just one run and three hits in 6.2 innings of work.

The Musketeers are back in action with the Purple Aces with a doubleheader set to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET tomorrow. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.

XU AT THE PLATE

Ryan Altenberger finished 2-3 at the plate with a walk, scoring a run after stealing home in the second inning.
Jeff Holtz went 2-4, brought in an RBI and scored a run.
Garrett Schultz went 2-4, collecting an RBI on a seventh-inning single and scoring a run.
Andrew Walker (1-4) finished with two RBI after hitting a second-inning solo home run, and also collected an RBI in the seventh
Natale Monastra (1-5) collected two RBI on ninth-inning single.
Andrew Sexton, Jack Housinger and Jared Cushing each finished with a hit.

XU ON THE MOUND

Trevor Olson made his third start of the season, going 6.2 innings only allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out a career-high eight batters along the way. Olson picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season.
Jonathan Kelly entered for the final out of the seventh, pitching 1.1 scoreless inning, allowing two only hits.
Griffin Lanoue entered in the ninth inning, not allowing a hit or a walk to close out the win.

HOW THE SCORED

2ND INNING | Ryan Altenberger took a one-out walk, advanced to second on a Jeff Holtz single, and advanced to third on a fielders choice before stealing home to give Xavier the 1-0 lead.

3RD INNING | Andrew Walker hit a solo shot to right field to give Xavier a 2-1 lead.

7TH INNING | Xavier put two on with no outs after Jeff Holtz led off the inning with a single and Grant Stephenson walked. Jared Cushing used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, then Garrett Schultz hit an RBI single to bring Holtz in from third, making it 3-1 Xavier. With one out, Andrew Walker grounded out to third, allowing Stephenson to score, putting Xavier ahead 4-1.

9TH INNING | Jared Cushing, Garrett Schultz and Andrew Sexton each singled to load the bases, and with one out, Jack Krumbach put the ball in play, reaching on a fielder's choice as the Purple Aces went home to keep Cushing from scoring the run. With two outs and the bases loaded Natale Monastra singled to center field to send Schultz and Sexton home, putting Xavier ahead 6-1.
