Baseball Takes Series Win Against Butler with 16-6 Win on Sunday

Musketeers use 11-run fourth inning to secure win
CINCINNATIÂ -Â An 11-run fourth inning powered Xavier baseball past Butler in the series finale, with the Musketeers taking a 16-6 win for the 3-1 series victory at Hayden Field. Xavier closed out the weekend at 14-15 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST play.
After scoring a pair in the bottom of the first, Xavier headed into the fourth with a 2-1 lead. Luke Franzoni led off the inning with a homer and the Musketeers brought 15 batters to the plate in the inning to score 11 runs on five hits and six walks. After adding another run in the fifth to take a 14-1 lead into the seventh. Butler scored five in the top of the seventh to make it a 14-6 lead for the Musketeers, but a run in the bottom of the inning, plus another Xavier run in the eighth set the final score at 16-6, ending the game on a run-rule with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Trevor Olson picked up the win, going 4.0 innings in the start. Jack Housinger and Jeff Holtz each had a team-high three hits while Ryan Altenberger and Alex Helmin each brought in three RBI.
Xavier had 14 hits to bring the total for the weekend to 39 in the first four games of the Musketeers' Pledge It campaign to support Vs. 2ND INNING | Andrew Walker took a lead-off walk then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jack Housinger hits a single then took second on the throw as Walker came home, putting Xavier up 1-0. Natale Monastra put the ball in play, reaching on a throwing error and allowing Housinger to come home, putting Xavier up 2-0.
4TH INNING |Â Luke Franzoni led off the inning with a homer down the left field line, putting Xavier up 3-1.
With one out, Andrew Walker singled through the left side, stole second and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Jack Housinger doubled to send Walker home, Xavier 4-1. Housinger stole third, Ryan Altenberger walked and stole second, then Lane Flamm walked to load the bases for Alex Helmin with two outs. Helmin hit a triple down the right field line to bring in three runs, Xavier 7-1.
Garrett Schultz and Luke Franzoni, in his second at-bat of the inning, both walked to load the bases with two outs again. Grant Stephenson was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, 8-1 Xavier. Andrew Walker walked to bring in a run, 9-1 Xavier. A bases-loaded wild pitch advanced all three runners, bringing Franzoni home for his second run of the inning, 10-1 Xavier.
Jack Housinger walked to load the bases again, and Ryan Altenberger hit a triple down the right field line to bring in three more runs, 13-1 Xavier, capping an 11-run inning with five hits and six walks.
5TH INNING |Â Jeff Holtz hit a solo homer to left field to make it 14-1 Xavier.
7TH INNING |Â Jeff Holtz hit a lead-off double to center field and took third on a wild pitch, coming home on a sac fly from Jackson Kaplowitz, 15-6 Xavier.
8TH INNING |Â Jack Housinger took a one-out walk, and moved into scoring position after a walk from Luke Stephenson. Jeff Holtz singled to left field to bring Housinger in from second bases, setting the score at 16-6 and ending the game with a run-rule decision.

- Trey Schramm pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out a pair.
