Musketeeers split the series 2-2 with the Huskies

CINCINNATI - A walk-off three run homer from Alex Helmin gave Xavier the 6-5 win in the series finale against UConn on Tuesday at Hayden Field. Xavier splits the series with the Huskies, 2-2.

UConn scored a run in the top of the first and added another in the fifth to take a two run lead, but the Musketeers responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead int o the eighth. UConn scored three unanswered to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Alex Helmin's three-run homer gave the Musketeers the 6-5 win in walk-off fashion.

Xavier moved to 16-17 overall and 7-4 in BIG EAST play, while UConn moved to 18-14 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play.

Xavier wrapped up its Pledge it Campaign to support Vs. Cancer with 74 hits through the Butler and UConn series, while Xavier pitchers posted 62 strikeouts in those eight games.

SCORING RECAP

5TH INNING | Andrew Walker led off the the inning with a solo home run down the left field line to cut UConn's lead to one, 2-1.
Ryan Altenberger walked with one out, and then with two outs, Luke Stephenson homered to left center to put Xavier in front, 3-2.

9TH INNING | After UConn scored in the eighth and ninth to take a two run lead, Jeff Holtz reached on a error, and Natale Monastra walked to give Xavier a pair of baserunners. With on out, Alex Helmin homered to left field to bring in three runs and give Xavier the walk-off win, 6-5.

XU AT THE PLATE

Alex Helmin (1-5) finished with a team-high three RBI after hitting a walk-off three run homer, his third home run of the season.
Luke Stephenson added to his team-high in home runs, hitting a two-run shot in the fifth inning for his sixth of the year. Stephenson finished with a pair of RBI and score a run.
Andrew Walker (1-5) finished with an RBI and a run scored after a fifth-inning solo home run, his third of the year.
Jack Housinger finished 3-5 at the plate.
Natale Monastra finished with three walks and scored a run.
Ryan Altenberger, Garrett Schultz and Luke Franzoni each recorded a hit for the Musketeers.

XU ON THE MOUND

Xander Rojahn made his first start of the season and second as a Musketeer, going 3.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and four walks.
Jack Lynch entered for the fourth, going 3.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits and a walk, striking out a pair.
Jonathan Kelly entered for the seventh inning, going 2.2 and allowing three runs on two hits and three walks.
Sam Czabala entered for the final out with a runner on, striking out the final Husky batter. Czabala picked up the win, his first of the season.
