LHP Nick Zwack (2-3) matched his career high in strikeouts with nine

QUEENS, N.Y. - Nick Zwack matched his career high in strikeouts on Friday afternoon with nine, but the Xavier baseball team dropped its BIG EAST opener, 2-1, at St. John's.

Xavier moved to 9-14 (0-1 BIG EAST), while the Red Storm improved to 10-5 (1-0 BIG EAST). Game two of the weekend series is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.

XU AT THE PLATE

Xavier held a 5-4 advantage in hits on Friday afternoon and left four more runners on base (10-6).
Andrew Walker was the only Musketeer with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an run and a double. He now has six multi-hit games on the year, including four straight games with two or more hits.
Jack Housinger went 1-for-3 with a double, extending his hit streak to six games. Natale Monastra also collected a hit (1-for-3), also posting a hit in his sixth straight contest.

XU ON THE MOUND

Nick Zwack (2-3) pitched 6.2 innigns, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned). He matched his career high in strikeouts with nine. The Monticello, Minn., native has thrown nine strikeouts in a game five times during his career.
Jonathan Kelly pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, surrendering one hit to go along with one strikeout.

HOW THEY SCORED

2ND INNING | Luke Stephenson grounded out to third base, scoring Andrew Walker from third base. Walker reached base on a double to left center field and advanced to third on a stolen base.

2ND INNING | Marty Higgins hit a two-out, RBI single up the middle to score Vincent Bianchi and tie the game at one.

6TH INNING | Ryan Hogan crossed home plate on a two-out, bases loaded walk of David Williams.
