Huntzinger, Housinger homer for the Musketeers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The bats were slow to get started in the series opener at Indiana, but both teams got the bats going late as Xavier picked up the 9-7 win.

The Musketeers picked up the first run, with Garrett Schultz taking the lead-off walk, moving to second on a failed pick-off attempt and third on a wild pitch. Jared Cushing lifted a ball into right field with one out to drive in the run and put Xavier ahead 1-0. The Hoosiers used four walks in the fourth to plate a run and tie the game, 1-1.

Both teams remained hitless through five innings, with Mile Halligan going 4.0 innings in the start without allowing a hit and giving up just one run before Xavier went to the bullpen.

After the fifth, the scoring picked up, with Xavier moving back in front 2-1 in the sixth inning after Jerry Huntzinger walked, moved to third on a Jack Housinger single, the first hit for either team, then came home on a wild pitch. The Hoosiers responded in the bottom of the inning, knocking in a two-run homer for the first hit against the Musketeers, going ahead 3-2.

A four-run sixth for Xavier, capped by a three-run homer for Jerry Huntzinger, gave Xavier a 6-3 lead but three Hoosier bottom of the frame sent the game to the eighth tied 6-6.

Xavier added two in the eight and another in the ninth on a Jack Housinger home run to lead 9-6. IU got a run back in the bottom of the ninth before the final score was set at 0-7.

Xavier returns to action with the Hoosiers on Saturday, playing game two at 12:00 p.m. before closing out the series with a double-header on Sunday, starting at noon.

Jerry Huntzinger led the Musketeers with three RBI on a three-run homer in the seventh. He came around to score twice.
Jack Housinger picked up a pair of hits, including a home run in the ninth.
Matthew DePrey had a pair of hits, coming around to score a run.
Jared Cushing and Lane Flamm each drove in an RBI.
Garrett Schutlz, Tyler DeMartino, Andrew Walker and Luke Franzoni each finished with a him.

XU ON THE MOUND

Miles Halligan made the start, not allowing a hit through four complete innings, and giving up just one run on four walks.
Jack Lynch entered for the fifth inning, going 2.0 inning before leaving in the seventh. Lynch finished with three runs allowed, one earned, on. three hits with four strikeouts.
Jonathan Kelly entered in the eighth, facing two batters and allowing two runs, one earned, on two walks.
Jared Gadd entered for Kelly in the seventh with no outs, allowing one hit but not allowing a run with a strikeout. Gadd finished with 1.2 innings of work, giving up three hits but not allowing a run to pick up the win.
Jerry Huntzinger moved to the mound from second base for the final 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two walks and no hits, picking up the save.
