Xavier Keeps the Bats Hot and Knocks Off Indiana
03.19.22 | Baseball
Trevor Olson throws five shutout innings to pace defense
Early action favored the Musketeers, as they got on the board with an Andrew Walker double in the first. Behind stellar pitching by Trevor Olson, Xavier held the lead and was able to add in the middle innings.
With the bases loaded, Lane Flamm hit a sac fly followed immediately by a Garrett Schultz two-RBI double. In the fifth, Jerry Huntzinger hit a solo home run, and Tyler DeMartino doubled with a runner on to put Xavier up 6-0. The floodgates opened in the sixth as the Musketeers had six runners cross the plate behind a Huntzinger single, a three-RBI homer by Jack Housinger, and two more RBIs from Schultz.
Up 12-0, Coach Billy O'Connor took the ball from Olson after five innings (78 pitches), six strikeouts, and only one hit allowed. The bullpen yielded to Indiana bats as they hung a five spot in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the eighth. However, the rally stopped abruptly in the ninth as Luke Bell retired the side in order when it mattered most. Xavier won and took a 2-0 series lead on the Hoosiers by a score of 12-10.
Xavier is back for a doubleheader tomorrow starting at Noon as they look to take the series from the Hoosiers.
