Natalie Bain scores in the first half for 1-0 victory

INDIANAPOLIS - A first half goal from Natalie Bain and a fifth shutout for the Musketeer defense helped Xavier women's soccer pick up the 1-0 win at Butler on Thursday evening. The Musketeers moved to 7-2-1 on the season, and 1-0 in BIG EAST play.

Xavier held the advantage on offense in the first half, taking a 9-3 lead on shots, including a 4-1 lead on shots on-goal before the half. Midway through the first half, one of the looks on-goal, a header from Natalie Bain off a free kick from Rachel Dewey, found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead which the Musketeers took into the break

In the second half the Bulldogs offense turned up the pressure creating four shots, two on-goal, in the first 15 minutes of the second period. Butler ended up with an 8-6 advantage on shots overall in the second 45, but each team had three shots on-goal in the period. Goalkeeper Maria Galley collected all three Bulldogs shots on-goal to pick up the clean sheet and help the Musketeers secure the win.

The Musketeers return home to host DePaul at Corcoran Field on Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m.

23' | XAVIER | Off a free kick Rachel Dewey served the ball from the right side of the field into the box. Natalie Bain, on the left side of the six-yard box, used a header to finish to the left side, giving Xavier a 1-0 lead.

NOTABLE

Natalie Bain's game-winning goal in the first half was her first as a Musketeer
Rachel Dewey picked up an assist on Bain's goal, her second of the season.
Chloe Netzel led the Musketeers with four shots, three on-goal. Xavier finished with a 15-11 advantage on shots, and a 7-4 advantage on looks on-goal.
Maria Galley collected four saves in goal to pick up the shutout, her fifth of the season.
Natalie Bain, Olivia Lawson and Rachel Dewey played the full 90 minutes, Molly McLaughlin and Ella Rogers each played of 85 minutes to help the Musketeers keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Xavier's defense has not allowed a goal in over 240 straight minutes, dating back to the Lipscomb game.
