Desmond Claude leads four Musketeers in double figures
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Xavier men's basketball suffered its first setback of the season, falling 83-71 at No. 2 Purdue on Monday evening. Four Musketeers hit double figures at Mackey Arena, led by 15 for Desmond Claude, as Xavier moved to 2-1 on the season.
Xavier scored on the opening possession before the Boilermakers scored seven straight to take the lead, not trailing in the final 18:10 of the first half. Xavier used a 6-0 run to tie it up midway through the half, matching Purdue at 17-17 at the under-12 timeout. After going into the final nine minutes tied, Purdue outscored Xavier 9-2 to build a multiple-possession advantage, leading by as many as nine before going into halftime up eight, 37-29. Trey Green led Xavier with eight first half points and all nine players who entered the game scored in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Boilermakers hit the opening basket for the first double-digit lead, holding at least a two-possession lead the rest of the way. Xavier would get as close as five, 51-46, with 13 minutes remaining before Purdue stretched the lead out to as many as 14 before winning by 12, 83-71. Desmond Claude had 13 in the second half to lead Xavier.
