CINCINNATI - Xavier men's soccer defeated No. 21 Akron on Saturday night at Corcoran Field in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.

Xavier improves to 8-3-5 on the year, while the Zips drop to 9-2-7.

NOTABLE

• Both teams took 10 shots in the mach with Akron taking one more shot on goal (6-5). Xavier committed two more fouls (11-9) and was called offsides three more times (4-1) than the Zips. Akron took two more corner kicks (5-3) and had six cards (four yellow, two red).

• Jonny Mennell (8-3-5) made five saves and recorded his seventh shutout of the season. He now has a 0.77 goals against average and 48 saves on the year.

• Grayson Elmquist scored a goal in his second straight match. The freshman forward led the Musketeers in shots with two (one on goal). A total of nine different Musketeers recorded a shot in the match.

• Xavier moved to 1-2-1 vs nationally ranked opponents this season and 1-0-1 vs the Zips. The Musketeers picked up their first win over a top-25 opponent since Aug. 23, 2019 vs No. 2 Akron at Corcoran Field (W, 2-0).

• Xavier advances to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since the 2017 season.

• Xavier handed the nationally ranked Zips only their second loss of the season. It was also only the third time they have been shut out all season (two times by Xavier; also shut out on Sept. 19 vs Notre Dame).
