Xavier Sweeps Doubleheader to Secure Series Win Against Wofford

Musketeers and Terriers wrap up series Sunday at 1 PM
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Xavier baseball used a combined 29 strikeouts and 25 hits to sweep the Saturday doubleheader at Wofford. The Musketeers won game one, 9-1, after a ninth-inning offensive explosion to break the game open, and took game two, 5-2, in 14 innings, with a three-run Jack Housinger homer breaking the 2-2 tie. Xavier pulls even at 9-9 on the season with the wins.
In the series opener, Xavier took the early lead, with Carter Hendrickson hitting an RBI triple to drive in Tyler DeMartino for the 1-0 lead in the second inning. The lead held into the fifth when Wofford got on the board to tie the game up a 1-1. Ethan Bosacker struck out nine in 6.0 innings in his fifth start of the season, and Justin Loer and Connor Bailey closed out the game without allowing a run, combining for a then season-high matching 12-strikeouts.
The tie held into the eighth when Hayden Christiansen's second home run of the year, a two-run shot to left, drove in a pair of runs to give Xavier the 3-1 lead. The Musketeers broke the game open in the ninth, adding six runs on seven hits to set the final score at 9-1.
In the second game, the Terriers struck first, getting a run in the third inning. Carter Hendrickson's second home run of the season tied it up a 1-1 in the fifth. Starter Brant Alazaus went a season-long 7.0 innings, matching his career-high with 11 strikeouts, set while at Walsh. The Musketeer pitching staff combined for a season-high 17 strikeouts, the most Ks in a game for Xavier since throwing 18 strikeouts against Ole Miss on February 22, 2020.
The 1-1 tie held through the ninth, forcing extra innings. Xavier took the lead in the 10th, with Luke Hammond leading off the inning with a double and Matthew DePrey driving him in with an RBI single. Wofford responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to send the game to the 11th inning.
The 2-2 tie held until the 14th, when Jack Housinger hit a three-run homer to right field, driving in Andrew Walker and Matthew DePrey to put the Musketeers in front for good, 5-2.
Xavier wraps up the series with the Terriers on Sunday, set for a 1:00 p.m. start.

- Brant Alazaus went a season-long 7.0 innings allowing just one earned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts to one walk. His 11 strikeouts match his career high, set while at Walsh against Lake Erie on May 7, 2022. His 11 Ks are the most by a Musketeer since Nick Zwack had 11 at Creighton on May 20, 2021.
- Jonathan Kelly entered for the eighth, going 0.2 innings, giving up one hit and not allowing a run.
- Clay Schwaner came in for the last out of the eighth, going 3.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits wih two strikeouts.
- Nick Kolze entered in the 12th, going 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, and finishing with two strikeouts to three walks.
- Creighton Hansen entered with one out and two on in the 13th, getting a fielders choice to save the run at home for the second out and getting the strike out to get out of the jam. Hansen went 1.2 innings, not allowing a run or a hit, issuing just one walk.
- Jack Housinger finished with a pair of hits (2-7) driving in three RBI on his fourth home run of the season.
