Ethan Bosacker goes career-long 7.2 innings in BIG EAST opening win

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball extended its win streak to eight, taking an 8-3 win over Butler at Hayden Field on Thursday afternoon to move to 18-12 on the season, opening BIG EAST play at 1-0.

The Musketeers took the lead in the second inning after getting the first two on, with Tyler DeMartino reaching on an error and Matt McCormick hitting a single through the middle. DeMartino moved to third on a fielder's choice and came home on a sac fly from Alex Helmin to put the Musketeers up 1-0.

The Musketeers used base running to turn three walks and a single into a pair of runs into the fourth with Tyler DeMartino and Jared Cushing both scoring on balks to put Xavier ahead 3-0.

In the sixth Xavier added another run after Carter Hendrickson and Jared Cushing took back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Alex Helmin moved Hendrickson to third with a sac fly and Connor Misch brought him home with a single to make it a 4-0 Xavier lead. The Musketeers made it a 5-0 lead when Cushing came home on a fielder's choice.

A pair of home runs in the eighth plated three runs for the Bulldogs, cutting the Xavier lead to 5-3 before a strikeout from Ethan Bosacker on his final batter of the day, and another K from Justin Loer got the Musketeers out of the inning.

Xavier got all three runs back in the bottom of the frame, with Matthew DePrey hitting an RBI double, then coming home on a two-run homer from Andrew Walker, setting the final score at 8-3 in favor of the Musketeers.

The Musketeers and the Bulldogs return to Hayden Field on Friday, with game two set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

ON THE MOUND

Ethan Bosacker went a career-long 7.2 innings in the start, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out seven with two walks. Bosacker picked up the win to move to 4-2 on the season.
Justin Loer entered with two out and one on in the eighth, getting out of the inning with a strikeout out.
Jonathan Kelly pitched the ninth, not allowing a base runner and striking out one.

AT THE PLATE

Andrew Walker finished with two RBI after hitting his third home run of the season in the eighth, a two-run shot to right field.
Matthew DePrey had a pair of RBI, including one on an double in the eighth.
Alex Helmin went 2-2 at the plate, driving in an RBI.
Connor Misch picked up an RBI after hitting a single as a pinch hitter.
Tyler DeMartino and Jared Cushing each finished with two runs scored after getting aboard with a pair of walks. Carter Hendrickson also had a pair of walks, scoring a run, and Jack Housinger also had a two walks on the day.
