Brant Alazaus goes season-long 8.0 innings in 4-2 win
CINCINNATI -Â Xavier baseball used a season-long outing from Brant Alazaus and three big swings to take a 4-2 win over Butler at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon. Xavier moves to 19-12 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST play, winning its ninth game in a row.
The win streak matches the longest win streak in the Xavier record books, and is the fourth time in program history the Musketeers have won nine straight, with the last time occurring in 2012.
Matthew DePrey got the Musketeers on the board in the first inning with a home run to center field, and Matt McCormick made it a 2-0 Xavier lead in the second with a solo shot to right field.
Butler hit a solo homer in the fourth to cut the lead in half, but in the bottom of the inning, Jared Cushing hit a two-run shot to right, driving in McCormick to put Xavier in front 4-1.Â
The Bulldogs would get another solo home run in the fifth, but Brant Alazaus limited Butler to just those two hits in 8.0 inning, and Clay Schwaner faced the minimum in the ninth to lock up the 4-2 win.
The Musketeers and the Bulldogs wrap up the series on Saturday at Hayden Field, with game three set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
