Musketeer take 13-6 victory at Hayden Field for new program-best win streak

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball wrapped up the BIG EAST opening series against Butler with a sweep, taking game three, 13-6, at Hayden Field and winning a program-best 10th straight game in the process. Xavier moves to 20-12 on the season and stands at 3-0 in BIG EAST action.

The Bulldogs took the lead on a first-inning home run and added a pair of runs in the third to lead 3-0 going into the bottom of the frame.

In the bottom of the third, Jared Cushing led off with a double, then came home on a Jack Housinger double. Housinger would score on an error to help Xavier cut the lead to 3-2.

Butler's one-run lead held into the fifth, where Alex Helmin's first home run of the season drove in two runs, with Jared Cushing scoring after a lead-off walk, putting Xavier in front 4-3.

Xavier added four more runs in the inning, with Andrew Walker hitting an RBI single, and Tyler DeMartino hitting a three-run homer to put Xavier in front 8-3.

The Bulldogs added a run in the next frame on a home run, but Xavier re-extended the lead in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits with a pair of walks to lead 11-4.

Butler pulled with in five, 11-6, with two runs in the eighth, but a solo home run from Matthew DePrey followed by an RBI single from Teddy Deters set the final score at 13-6.

The Musketeers returns to the field on Tuesday, April 11, taking on Wright State at Cincinnati for the Joe Nuxhall Classic Championship, set to begin at 2:00 p.m.

ON THE MOUND

Luke Bell went 3.0 innings in the start, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout to one walk.
Jonathan Kelly entered in the fourth, going 3.0 innings in relief. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk, picking up the win to move to 2-0 on the season.
Nick Boyle pitched the seventh, facing the minimum and picking up a strikeout.
Justin Loer pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Musketeer pitchers wrapped up the first weekend of the Xavier's Pledge It campaign to support Vs. Cancer with 23 strikeouts.

AT THE PLATE

Alex Helmin finished 2-4 at the plate with a career-high four RBIs, including driving in a pair on his first home run of the season.
Tyler DeMartino had a season-high four RBI, going 2-5 at the plate, including knocking in a three-run homer, his seventh of the season.
Matthew DePrey went 2-4 at the plate, knocking in an RBI on his team-best 10th home run of the season and scoring a pair of runs.
Andrew Walker went 1-3 with a pair of walks, scoring three runs.
Jared Cushing sent 1-2 with three walks, scoring a pair of runs.
Jack Housinger finished with an RBI and a pair fo runs scored after hitting an RBI double.
Teddy Deters (1-1, 1 RBI) and Connor Misch (1-1) each recorded a hit as well on a 13-hit day for the Musketeers, helping the Xavier bats wrap up the first weekend of the Xavier's Pledge It campaign to support Vs. Cancer with 25 hits.
