Eight-Run Inning Helps Xavier to Comeback Win Over Cincinnati

Musketeers top Bearcats 11-9 in home opener
CINCINNATI -Â Xavier baseball put together an eight-run sixth inning to erase a six-run deficit on the way to an 11-9 win over Cincinnati at Hayden Field on Tuesday. Xavier has won four of its last five, standing at 4-4 on the season.
Cincinnati scored a run in each the first two innings, taking a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second Xavier got on the board after Hayden Christiansen led off with a double, then scored on a double from Luke Hammond. Carter Hendrickson moved Hammond to third with a ground ball, and then Hammond came home on a ground ball from Jared Cushing to tie it at 2-2.
A pair of three-run innings for the Bearcats put UC back in front, 8-2, going into the bottom of the fifth. Xavier chipped away at the lead, scoring a run when Aedan Anderson took a two-out walk, then scored on an RBI double from Christiansen to cut it to 8-3.
The Musketeers held UC off the board in the top of six, with Matthew DePrey throwing out a runner at third to erase an error and get the Musketeers out of the inning facing the minimum.Â
In the bottom of the frame, Carter Hendrickson led off the inning by getting aboard after being hit by a pitch to put a runner on for Jared Cushing, who homered to left. Isaac Wachsmann made it back-to-back home runs, hitting a solo shot to left to cut the UC lead to 8-6.
A double from Grant Stephenson and a walk for DePrey put two runners on for Matt McCormick, who hit a three-run shot to left putting Xavier in front 11-8.
Christiansen hit a double, Hendrickson took a base on balls and Cushing reached on an error to load the bases for Isaac Wachsmann, who drove in two more runs with a single to wrap up the eight run inning with Xavier in front 11-8.
UC scored a run in the seventh, the final run of the day, to set the score at 11-9 in favor of the Musketeers,
Xavier now heads south for an eight-game road trip to the Gulf Coast, starting with three games against Florida Gulf Coast, running from Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3. Game one is set for a 6:30 p.m. start on Friday

- Â Isaac Wachsmann had a three-hit day (3-of-4) including his second home run of the season. He drove in three RBI, all in the sixth inning.
- Matt McCormick drove in three RBI on his second home run of the season. He finished with a hit (1-of-4) and a walk.
- Jared Cushing went 2-of-4 at the plate, including a two-run home run in the sixth. He finished with three RBI total.
- Hayden Christiansen hit three doubles (3-of-5) driving in one RBI and scoring a pair of runs.

- Tyler Sausville entered for the fourth inning, going 1.0 inning with one run allowed on two hits, striking out a pair and walking a pair.
- Connor Bailey entered in the fifth, going 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, finishing with two strikeouts to one walk. Bailey was credited with the win, moving to 1-0 on the season.
- Jake Hooker entered with two on and one out in the seventh, getting the Musketeers out of the inning with the lead intact. Hooker went 1.0 inning, not allowing a run or a hit, walking one and striking out one.
- Alex Vera entered with one on and one out in the eighth, going the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run or hit, picking up a strikeout. Vera was credited with the save, his first of the season.
