Musketeer finish weekend 2-1 against the Rams after 10-5 loss on Sunday

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball fell in the series finale against VCU, 10-5, at Hayden Field on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers finished the series at 2-1 and moved to 11-13 on the season.

Xavier took the 1-0 lead in the first after Luke Hammond led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a flyball from Matt McCormick before coming home on a ground ball from Hayden Christiansen.

The Rams hit a solo home run in the second to tie it up at 1-1, but in the bottom of the frame Jared Cushing led off with a single, stole second and scored on double from Grant Stephenson to put Xavier back in front, 2-1.

Three runs in the top of the third gave VCU its first lead of the day at 4-2, but the Musketeers responded with a pair in the bottom of the inning, with Christiansen getting on with a single to put a runner on for Aedan Anderson, who homered to left center to tie the game at 4-4.

VCU reclaimed the lead in the next frame, scoring a pair of runs to move in front 6-4. Tyler Stack led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, Grant Stephenson walked and Matt McCormick was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Christiansen reached on an error to drive in Stack, cutting the Rams' lead to one, 6-5.

VCU added another run to its lead in the fifth to lead 7-5. The Musketeers got the tying run on base in both the seventh and eighth, but the Rams took the two-run lead into the ninth, where VCU added three runs to take a 10-5 advantage which held through the bottom of the inning.

Xavier continues its seven-game homestand on Tuesday, March 26, hosting Wright State for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.

AT THE PLATE

Aedan Anderson went 2-of-4, hitting his fourth home run of the season to drive in two RBI and score a run.
Hayden Christiansen (1-5) finished with two RBI and came around to score a run.
Grant Stephenson went 2-of-3 with a walk, driving in an RBI with his second-inning double.
Luke Hammond finished with a pair of hits (2-4) and scored a run.
Jared Cushing (1-5) and Tyler Stack (1-4) each recorded a hit and scored a run.
Matthew DePrey finished with a hit and a walk, and Connor Misch also got aboard with a walk.

ON THE MOUND

Nick Boyle went 3.2 innings in the start, giving up six runs on three hits and five walks, striking out three.
Connor Bailey entered for the final out of the fourth, going 1.0 inning, allowing one run run on one hit and a walk.
Jake Lambdin came in for the final out of the final out of the fifth, going 2.1 innings without allowing a run, giving up one hit, striking out three and walking a pair.
Alex Vera entered for the eighth inning, going the final 2.0 innings with three runs allowed on three hits, finishing with two strikeouts and no walks.
