Musketeer pitchers collects season-high 15 Ks

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball picked up the midweek win over Wright State, 10-7, at Hayden Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win evened the season series with the Raiders at 1-1 and moved Xavier to 12-13 on the season.

The Musketeers moved in front first with a five-run bottom of the first, with Matt McCormick taking a one-out walk and moving to third when Hayden Christiansen reached on an error. Connor Misch singled to right field to drive in McCormick for the 1-0 lead. After Matthew DePrey walked to load the bases, Christiansen came home on a wild pitch to put Xavier in front 2-0. After Christiansen scored, Aedan Anderson walked to load the bases, and Jared Cushing, Tyler Stack and Grant Stephenson were each hit by a pitch to drive in three more runs to give Xavier a 5-0 lead after the first.

Two solo home runs in the top of the second got the Raiders on the board, cutting the Xavier lead to 5-2.

The Musketeers got a run back in the third, with Anderson getting aboard with his second walk of the day and scoring on a double from Cushing to extend the lead back to 6-2. Xavier pushed it back to a five-run lead in the fourth after one-out singles from McCormick and Christiansen. McCormick moved to third on a fly ball from Misch then scored on a single from DePrey to make it a 7-2 lead.

A five-run fifth inning for the Raiders tied the game up at 7-7, but the Musketeers retook the lead in the bottom of the frame.

Stack and Stephenson each got on with a walk to start the fifth, scoring on a double from McCormick to put Xavier back in front 9-2. A solo home run from Anderson in the eight made it a 10-7 Xavier advantage into the top ninth where Jake Lambdin came in from the bullpen, striking out three to wrap up the game.

The Musketeers remain at home this weekend, hosting Bowling Green for three games at Hayden Field, running from Thursday, March 28 through Saturday, March 30.

AT THE PLATE

Matt McCormick went 2-of-4 with a walk, driving in two RBI with his fifth-inning double, and coming around to score twice.
Jared Cushing went 1-of-4 at the plate, driving in two RBI.
Aedan Anderson went 1-of-2 at the plate with three walks, hitting his fifth home run of the season in the eighth inning to finish with an RBI and coming around to score three runs.
Matthew DePrey went 1-of-3 with a pair of walks, driving in an RBI and scoring a run.
Tyler Stack and Grant Stephenson each scored a run and a picked up an RBI in the first inning after being hit by a pitch.
Connor Misch (1-3, 1 BB) finished with an RBI and a run scored.
Hayden Christiansen went 2-of-5, scoring a run.

ON THE MOUND

Matthew Aukerman made the start, his first as a Musketeer, going 2.0 inning, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out three and walking one.
Jack Niederinghaus entered for the third, going 2.0 innings without allowing a run or a hit, striking out two and walking one.
Terry Murray came in for the fifth inning, pitching 0.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Alex Vera entered for the final out of the fifth, going 1.1 innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, on one hit, striking out a pair without issuing a walk. Vera picked up the win, his first of the season.
Nolan Hughes came in from the bullpen for the seventh inning, pitching two scoreless innings without allowing a hit, finishing with four strikeouts to no walks.
Jake Lambdin entered for the ninth, pitching the final 1.0 inning without allowing a run, giving up one hit. He finished with three strikeouts and one walk, picking up the save, his first of the season.
