Musketeers score five runs in the eighth to take two of three at Hayden Field

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball clinched the series win over Creighton on Sunday, taking a 7-3 win at Hayden Field to finish 2-1 against the Bluejays. Xavier moved to 17-18 overall and 3-3 in BIG EAST play with the win.

Xavier took the lead in the second inning, after Matthew DePrey walked and Jake Lambdin was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Luke Hammond, who doubled to center field to drive in two runs.

After allowing a hit in the first, Luke Hoskins faced the minimum through the fifth inning. Alex Vera entered in the sixth, pitching a 1-2-3 frame to keep the Musketeers in front 2-0, with the pair combining to retire 16-straight batters. In the seventh, Creighton tied it up a 2-2 with a two-run homer, with the tie holding into the bottom of eighth.

Matt McCormick led off the bottom half of the eighth with a single, DePrey was hit by a pitch and Grant Stephenson reached on an error after laying down a bunt, loading the bases. Carter Hendrickson doubled down the left field line to bring in two runs and put the Musketeers back in front, 4-2.

After Luke Hammond was intentionally walked to load the bases, Aedan Anderson and Hayden Christiansen took back-to-back walks to bring in two more runs. A fly ball from Jared Cushing brought in one more run to wrap up a five-run eighth inning, giving Xavier the 7-2 lead headed to the ninth.

A pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Creighton in the top of the ninth, but a double play and a strikeout from Jake Lambdin limited the Bluejays to just one run, setting the final score at 7-3.

Xavier is next in action on Wednesday, April 17, traveling across town to face Cincinnati, set for a 5:00 p.m. start at UC Baseball Stadium.

AT THE PLATE

Luke Hammond finished 2-of-4 with a walk, scored a run and collected a pair of RBI on a double in the second inning.
Carter Hendrickson went 2-of-4, driving in two RBI and scoring a run in the eighth inning.
Hayden Christiansen finished with a hit (1-2), and a pair of walks, driving in an RBI in the eighth.
Aedan Anderson also recorded a hit (1-3) and a pair of walks, and brought in an RBI in the eighth inning.
Jared Cushing (1-4) drove in a run with a sac fly in the eight inning.
Matthew DePrey finished with a walk and was hit by pitch twice, scoring two runs.
Matt McCormick finished 2-of-5, scoring a run. Grant Stephenson also scored a run.

ON THE MOUND

Luke Hoskins made the start, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, striking out four and not allowing a walk.
Alex Vera entered from the bullpen for the sixth, going 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Jake Lambdin moved from shortstop to the mound with one out in the seventh, going the final 2.2 innings. He allowed one run, did not give up a hit, and finished with three strikeouts to three walks, picking up the win, his first of the season.
