CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball dropped the second game of the three-game series against Villanova, 8-6, at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon. The Musketeers moved to 28-25 overall and 11-9 in BIG EAST play, locking in the No. 4 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament.

Villanova struck early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first and holding the advantage into the bottom of the second where the Musketeers tied it up at 2-2, with Connor Misch scoring on an error after getting on with a single, and Carter Hendrickson scoring on a single from Matthew DePrey after getting aboard with a walk.

In the fourth, the Musketeers took their first lead off the day, after Connor Misch led off with a double, moved to third on a fly ball from Hendrickson and scored on a sac fly from DePrey.

Xavier's 3-2 lead held into the sixth when Villanova retook the lead at 5-3 after scoring three runs on a pair of home runs. The Wildcats extended the lead to 8-3 with a three-run top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Isaac Wachsmann and Jared Cushing each got on with a walk to put two on and no outs for Hayden Christiansen, who homered to left to cut the lead back to two, 8-6, headed into the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Xavier got the first two batters aboard with walks, bringing the winning run to the plate but the Musketeers were unable to get any closer, falling 8-6.

The series finale is set for a 10:00 a.m. start on Saturday, May 18 at Hayden Field. The Musketeers will celebrate Senior Day ahead of game three, starting at approximately 9:35 a.m.

AT THE PLATE

Hayden Christiansen finished 1-of-2 after entering as a pinch runner in the sixth, hitting his eighth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the eighth, to finish with three RBI and a run scored.
Matthew DePrey (1-3) finished with two RBI after hitting an RBI single and driving in a run wih a sac fly.
Connor Misch went 2-of-3 with two walks, scoring a pair of runs.
Grant Stephenson went 1-of-2 with a walk.
Isaac Wachsmann finished with three bases on balls, Jared Cushing had a pair of walks and Carter Hendrickson got aboard with a walk, all coming around to score a run.
Aedan Anderson had two walks and Luke Hammond also took a base on balls, as the Musketeers finished with 12 walks on the day, one off their season high.

ON THE MOUND

Luke Hoskins made the start, going 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, striking out a pair and walking a pair.
Nolan Hughes entered for the seventh inning, going 1.2 innings, allowing three runs, not giving up a hit but walking six. Hughes finished with six strikeouts.
Nick Boyle entered for the final out of the eighth, going the final 1.1 innings without allowing a run. Boyle gave up just three hits and one walk, striking out a pair.
