Xavier moves on to the BIG EAST Tournament, starting Wednesday at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio
CINCINNATIÂ - Xavier baseball celebrated Senior Day with a 16-5 win over Villanova in seven innings at Hayden Field on Saturday afternoon. The Musketeers finished the series with the Wildcats at 1-2, and wrap up the regular season at 29-25 overall and 12-9 in BIG EAST play.
Villanova struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Musketeers scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not relinquish, with Isaac Wachsmann, Jared Cushing, Matt McCormick and Matthew DePrey driving in the runs, capped by a two-run home run for DePrey.
The Wildcats would add runs in the second and third innings, but a solo home run from Aedan Anderson in the second would help the Musketeers maintain at least a four-run lead, going into the bottom of the fourth with a 7-3 advantage.
A two-run home from McCormick in the fourth, and another homer from Anderson, a two-run shot in the fifth, broke the game open for the Musketeers, leading 11-3 going into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, four walks, a hit batsman and a pair of Wildcat errors helped Xavier added five more runs, bringing the Musketeers' scoring total to a season-high 16 runs.
Villanova added a pair of runs in the seventh to get within 11, but the Musketeers kept the Wildcats from getting any closer, wrapping up the game at 16-5 after the seventh on a run rule.
Xavier now heads to the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, running from Wednesday, May 22, through Saturday, May 25. The Musketeers secured the No. 4 seed and will open play on Wednesday against No. 1 seed UConn, set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.

AT THE PLATE
- Aedan Anderson went 3-for-3 with a walk, adding two home runs to his BIG EAST leading total, now standing at 18, with his third multi-homer day of the season. He finished with four RBI and scored three runs. Anderson's three hits and three runs scored match his season high.
- Matt McCormick went 3-of-4, hitting his 15th home run of the season. He finished with four RBI and scored three runs. McCormick's three hits are a season-high.
- Matthew DePrey finished 1-of-2 at the plate, walking twice. The catcher finished with a season-high three RBI, including driving in a pair on his third home run of the season, and scored a pair of runs.
- Jared Cushing finished 2-of-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Isaac Wachsmann (1-of-3) finished with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
- Grant Stephenson finished with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.
- Luke Hammond finished with a hit (1-3) and walk, scoring a run.
- Connor Misch had a pair of walks, and Hayden Christiansen also got aboard on a base on balls, both finishing with a run scored.
ON THE MOUND
- Connor Bailey made the start, matching his career-long with at 5.0 innings, also set on 3/22/2021 against Cincinnati. Bailey finished with three earned runs allowed on six hits, striking out four without issuing a walk. Bailey picked up the win to move to 3-1 on the season.
- Terry Murray entered in the sixth, pitching a scoreless 1.0 inning, not allowing a hit or a walk.
- Jimmy Starnes faced a pair of batters in the seventh, allowing two runs on a hit and walk.
- Jack Niedringhaus faced two batters in the seventh, entering with one on and no one out. He allowed one hit and walked one.
- Matthew Aukerman entered with two on and no outs in the seventh, pitching the final 1.0 inning without allowing a run or a hit.
