Xavier Takes 3-2 Win Over No. 1 UConn in Extra Innings to Advance in BIG EAST Tournament Winner's Bracket

Musketeers play No. 2 seed St. John's on Thursday evening
MASON, Ohio - After a lengthy rain delay and through extra innings, Xavier baseball opened up the BIG EAST Tournament with a 3-2 win over the top seeded UConn to advance in the winner's bracket, returning to action on Thursday evening against St. John's. The win moved the Musketeers to 30-25 on the season.
Xavier took a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Isaac Wachsmann walked and Jared Cushing singled to get the first two runners on. Wachsmann moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a single from Carter Hendrickson for the the first run of the day. After a double steal moved Cushing and Hendrickson both into scoring position, a sac fly from Luke Hammond brought in Cushing to make it a 2-0 advantage.
The lead held into the bottom of the fifth when UConn tied it on a two-run homer. The game was tied in the top of the sixth when the game entered a rain delay at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday evening and was postponed until Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
When the game resumed, Jonathan Kelly came out of the bullpen and pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three without issuing a walk.
After St. John's hit a triple to lead off the ninth, Jake Lambin came in from the bullpen and got the first out with a pop-up. Nolan Hughes came and picked up the final two outs of the ninth with strikeouts to send the game to extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th inning, with the Musketeers' defense erasing a lead-off walk with a double play in the bottom of the inning, Jared Cushing led off the top of the 11th with a solo home run to give Xavier the 3-2 edge.Â
Hughes closed out the bottom of the frame to give the Musketeers the win, Xavier's 30th of the season.
The Musketeers advance in the BIG EAST Championship winner's bracket, taking on St. John's on Thursday evening, set to start no earlier than 7:30 p.m.

- Jared Cushing went 2-of-4 with a walk, hitting his eighth home run of the season. He finished with an RBI and two runs scored.
