Musketeers and Hoyas face off in elimination bracket at 3:00 p.m. at Prasco Park
MASON, Ohio - Xavier baseball fell, 8-7, to No. 2 seeded St. John's in the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday evening at Prasco Park. The Musketeers moved to 30-26 overall and will now face No. 3 seed Georgetown on Friday, May 24, set for a 3:00 p.m. start in the elimination bracket. The winner will advance to face the Red Storm in the Championship series on Saturday at noon.
St. John's scored three in the bottom of the first, but the Musketeers responded with a three-run inning in the next frame. Matt McCormick and Carter Hendrickson hit back-to-back singles and Luke Hammond walked to put two on with one out for Matthew DePrey. The catcher singled to right to bring in one run, cutting it to 3-1, followed by a single to left for Grant Stephenson to drive in two runs to tie it up at 2-2 going to the bottom of the second.
SJU scored a pair in the bottom of the frame to retake a 5-3 lead, holding the two-run advantage into the fourth. A single from Hammond, a ground rule double from DePrey and a walk for Stephenson loaded the bases in the fourth, with Hammond scoring on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to one, 5-4.
In the fifth, McCormick got aboard with a one-out walk, and Hendrickson and Hammond were hit by pitches to load the bases for DePrey, who got a bunt down and past the pitcher to bring in McCormick to tie it at 5-5, and Hendrickson scored on an fielding error to give Xavier its first lead of the day at 7-5. A single from Aedan Anderson brought Hammond in to wrap up a three-run inning for the Musketeers, taking a 7-5 lead to the bottom of the frame.
The Red Storm picked up a run in the fifth but the Musketeers held the Johnnies off the board for the rest of the frame to keep a 7-6 lead. Xavier held the advantage into the bottom of the eighth where St. John's took the lead on a two-run home run. The Musketeers were unable to tie it up in the next frame, setting the final score at 8-7.
