Women's Soccer Remains at Home to Host Michigan on Sunday

Musketeers and Wolverines set to get underway at 5 PM at Corcoran Field
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer (1-0) remains at home for its next match, hosting Michigan (0-1) at Corcoran Field on Sunday, August 18. The Musketeers and the Wolverines are set for a 5:00 p.m. start on FloSports.
Admission is free to all regular soccer contests at Corcoran Field. Sunday's game will feature a T-Shirt Giveaway for Xavier students.

OPPONENT INFO
- UM opened the season on Thursday, falling 2-1 to Utah Valley. The Wolverines tied the game with less than two minutes to go in the match, but a Utah Valley goal in the final 30 seconds proved to be the game-winner for UVU.
- Michigan went 7-7-4 overall last season with a 3-5-2 record in Big 10 play.
- The Wolverines earned an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament, falling to Princeton in the first round.
- Xavier is 0-1 in the lone match-up between the two program's, a 4-2 win for the Wolverines in the 1998 NCAA Tournament First Round in Ann Arbor.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
- Xavier kicks off a five-match road trip at Murray State on Thursday, August 22, set for a 4:00 p.m. start on ESPN+.
- The Racers fell 2-1 at Cincinnati in the season opener, and continue the season-opening road trip at Southeast Missouri on Sunday.
- Murray State was picked to finish sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference after going 6-8-6 overall last season, with a 3-2-5 record in MVC play. The Racers advanced to the quarterfinals of the league tournament.
- Xavier is 2-0 all-time against Murray State, with the first match-up occurring in 2019.
- The two programs last faced off in 2021, a 2-1 win for the Musketeers in Cincinnati.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Musketeers opened up the 2024 season with 4-2 win over Milwaukee at Corcoran Field on Thursday evening. Xavier took the lead early, on a goal from Regan Dancer and Samantha Wiehe connected on a penalty kick in the 15th minute to make it a 2-0 Xavier advantage.
- Milwaukee responded less than five minutes later to cut the lead back to 2-1, but Olivia Lawson scored her second goal as a Musketeer in the final minutes of the first half to send Xavier to the break with a 3-1 lead.
- Midway through the second half, Olivia Baca's first collegiate goal extended the Musketeer lead to three, 4-1, which held into the final 10 minutes of the game. The Panthers found the back of the net in the 84th minute to set the final score at 4-2 in favor of the Musketeers.
- Samantha Wiehe has a team-high three points following game one after knocking a goal on a penalty kick and assisting on Regan Dancer's goal. She's now 3-3 on penalty kicks during her time at Xavier.
- Regan Dancer scored her sixth goal as a Musketeer to finish with two points.
- Olivia Lawson finished with two points after scoring her second goal as a Musketeer, her first game-winner.
- Olivia Baca added an insurance goal in the second half, her first collegiate score, to finish with two points.
- Peyton Kohls collected the first point of her collegiate career, assisting on Baca's goal.
- Elin Hansson finished with a point, her first as Musketeer, on an assist on Dancer's goal.
- Xavier finished with a 19-4 advantage on shots, led by three each for Hansson, Dancer and Kohls. The Musketeers also finished with a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
- Natalie Bain, McKinley Berry, Maddie Reed and Samantha Wiehe each played over 75 minutes, helping limit the Panthers to three shots on goal.
- Maria Galley picked up the win in-goal, her 29th career wins in-frame, tying Toni Bizzarro for the school record for career wins.
- The win marks the first victory as Xavier head coach for Dean Ward.
- The win over Milwaukee is Xavier's fourth-straight season-opening victory, and marks the eighth win in the season opener in the last nine seasons.
BAIN NAMED TO HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST
- Defender Natalie Bain was named one of the 44 NCAA Division Women's Division I college soccer players named to the 2024 Hermann Trophy Watch List, announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Thursday, August 15.
- Bain, a junior from Alexandria, Ky., was a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American and First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2023 and was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year ahead of the 2024 season.
- The defender made 20 starts for the Musketeers in 2023, playing 1,770 minutes for a Xavier defense that allowed only 11 goals for the season, winning a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
- Bain played the full time in 17 matches on the Xavier backline in 2023, helping the Xavier defense finished the season with 13 shutouts, matching the school record set in 2019. Offensively, Bain finished with two points on a goal, scored in Xavier's 3-0 win at DePaul. She had 14 shots on the season, with eight on-frame.
- The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club and is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by voting of Division I head coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
2023 season
- Xavier is coming off a 2023 season where the Musketeers went 14-4-4 overall and went 6-0-4 in conference play to win a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament, where XU finished runners-up.
- The 2023 Musketeers picked up an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, marking the third at-large bid in program history and the sixth trip overall to the national tournament.Â
- Xavier earned a No. 4 seed, the best seeding in program history, and hosted the opening round of the of the tournament, the second NCAA home match in program history.Â
THE 2024 MUSKETEERS
- The Musketeers return 15 letterwinners in all from last season, and added a six transfers in addition to an eight-person freshman class for Dean Ward's first year leading the Musketeers.
- Ward took over the program in December 2023, coming to Xavier from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C., where he led the Bears to 29 wins, two league titles, one conference tournament title and a pair of NCAA DII Women's Soccer Championship appearances in two seasons as head coach.
- Xavier returns four of all-conference honorees from last season, led by USC Second Team All-American Natalie Bain, who was selected as the league's Preseason Defender of the Year after earning a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team last season.Â
- Goalkeeper Maria Galley, an All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree in 2023, was also selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
- Xavier also returns Maddie Reed and Samantha Wiehe were selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2023.
- Wiehe led the Musketeers in points last season, totaling 20 with team high matching totals for goals (7) and assists (6).
- Reed anchored Xavier's backline last year, starting all 22 matches and playing 1,950 minutes for a Xavier defense that limited opponents to just 11 goals for the season.
