
Women's Tennis Travels to Michigan State to Face Spartans, West Virginia

Musketeers face Spartans at 5 PM Friday, Mountaineers at noon on Saturday
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's tennis heads to Michigan State this weekend to face the Spartans on Friday, Jan. 24 at 5:00 p.m. Xavier remains at MSU to face West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 25, set for a noon start.

MICHIGAN STATE
- Michigan State opened the season in Spokane, Wash., facing Gonzaga and Washington State. The Spartans fell 5-2 to the Bulldogs and 6-1 to the Cougars.
- MSU went 10-16 last season with a 1-10 mark in Big Ten play.
- The two teams faced off last season, with Xavier falling 5-2 in East Lansing.
WEST VIRGINIA
- WVU opened the season with wins over Duquesne, 4-3, and Morgan State, 7-0, in Morgantown.
- The Mountaineers went 15-13 last season, with a 3-10 mark in Big 12 play.
- Xavier and West Virginia last met in 1984, a 7-0 win for the Musketeers.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
- Next weekend, the Musketeers travel to West Layfayette, Ind., facing Purdue on Friday, January 31, and then taking on Memphis on Saturday, February 1, at Purdue.
LAST TIME OUT
- Xavier women's tennis opened up the regular season against Texas Tech, falling 7-0 to the Red Raiders.
- In doubles, Texas Tech took the first decision, with a 6-1 win on the No. 3 court against Sofia Mazzucato and Natalie Smitek. The No. 17 ranked pair of Abby Nugent and Clara Owen battled the No. 15 ranked duo on court No. 1, falling 6-3 to clinch the point for the Red Raiders. Emily Flowers and Elizabeth Pendergast took a 6-3 win over the No. 68 ranked pair on court No. 2.
- In singles, TTU made it 2-0 with a win on the No. 3 court against Madeleine Rexroat, 6-3, 6-1. Emily Flowers fell, 6-2, 6-1, on the No. 4 court to make it a 3-0 Red Raider lead. A 6-2, 7-6 (7) win over Abby Nugent on the No. 2 court made it a 4-0 lead for Texas Tech.
- Elizabeth Pendergast, playing on the No. 1 court, took the opening set but fell in a third set, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 14-12. Abigail Siminski fell 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 5 court and Sofia Mazzucato fell, 6-3, 7-6 (4), on the No. 6 court to set the final score at 7-0 in favor of Texas Tech.
THE MUSKETEERS
- The Musketeers are looking for their fifth-straight, and sixth overall, BIG EAST Championship, and look to make a return trip to the NCAA Championship.
- Xavier returned six student-athletes from last year's BIG EAST Championship roster including juniors Emily Flowers, Abby Nugent and Abigail Siminski as well as sophomores Ellie Brotherton and Sofia Mazzucato and senior transfer Elizabeth Pendergast, who made her debut as a Musketeer this fall. Xavier also added a trio of freshmen to the roster, Clara Owen, Madeleine Rexroat and Natalie Smitek.
- Xavier wrapped up the fall schedule with Abby Nugent and Clara Owen becoming the first players in program history to compete in doubles at the NCAA Individual Championships. The pair earned the bid after advancing to the finals of the ITA Conference Masters Championships.
- Madeleine Rexroat also took part in the ITA Conference Masters Championships, representing the BIG EAST in singles. Elizabeth Pendergast and Emily Flowers competed at the ITA Sectional Championships as a doubles team, with Pendergast also playing in the singles draw.
