Providence tops Xavier, 61-53, on Wednesday night
CINCINNATI - Meri Kanerva scored a game-high 17 points in Wednesday's 61-53 loss to Providence at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers moved to 6-19 (1-13 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 11-16 (4-10 BIG EAST).
Xavier continues its homestand on Sunday, Feb. 16 vs Villanova. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.

The Musketeers moved to 6-19 (1-13 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 11-16 (4-10 BIG EAST).

NOTABLE
- The game was back-and-forth as it featured seven ties and 12 lead changes. Xavier led for nearly 20 minutes of action. Neither team led by double-figures in the contest.
- Xavier led by as many as five points (41-36) with 1:07 left in the third quarter. The Musketeers led by one point (50-49) with 3:39 left in regulation.
- The Friars responded by scoring seven straight points to regain a lead they would never relinquish. The Friars outscored Xavier, 13-3, in the final four minutes of play to escape Cintas Center with the eight-point win (61-53).
- Meri Kanerva led three Musketeers in double figures with a game-high 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting. The freshman guard added a team-high four assists and three steals. She also pulled down three rebounds. Kanerva now has 14 career double-figure scoring games.
- Loren Christie added 10 points on 3-for-7 shooting. The forward added one rebound and one assist in 26 minutes of action off the bench. Christie now has 28 career double-figure scoring games.
- Aizhanique Mayo finished with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting with a pair of three pointers. The guard added one rebound, one assist and one steal in 17 minutes of action off the bench. Mayo now has 18 career double-figure scoring games.
- Petra Oborilova chipped in six points, one assist and one steal. Irune Orio added three points and three rebounds.
- Xavier finished the game with a .463 field-goal percentage (19-for-41) and went 6-for-18 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 9-for-11 from the foul line.
- The Friars hit 51.2 percent (21-for-41) of their shot attempts and went 2-for-13 from behind the arc. Providence was also 17-for-21 from the foul line.
- Xavier scored four more points off of turnovers (17-13) than the Friars and held a 25-7 advantage in bench points.
- Providence scored three more fastbreak points (9-6) than Xavier and held a 7-5 advantage in second-chance points.
- Xavier scored four more points in the paint (26-22) than the Friars.
- Providence won the battle on the glass, 25-18.
