Eight-Run Inning Powers Xavier Past Villanova, 13-3, in Series Opener

Logan Schmidt goes season-long 7.0 innings in start, striking out six
The Musketeers scored three runs in the second inning to move in front, with Nolan Tucker getting hit by a pitch and Jason Jelic hitting a single to put runners on the corners. Tucker came home on a passed ball to put the first run on the board. Isaac Wachsmann got on with a walk to put two on for Donavan Canterberry, who brought in Jelic with a single. Wachsmann scored on a throwing error after Canterberry stole second.
The Wildcats picked up a run in the fifth to cut the lead to two, 3-1, but the Musketeers responded with eight runs on eight hits in the sixth to take a 10-run lead. Singles from Connor Misch, Aedan Anderson and Tucker loaded the bases for Clay Burdette, who brought in a run with a walk. Jelic drove in two RBI with a double and Wachsmann brought in another with a single before an out was recorded in the inning.
Canterberry picked up another RBI with a sac fly for the fifth run of the frame, and after Jake Lambdin got on with a single and stole second, a single from Carter Hendrickson brought in two more runs. Tucker's second single of the inning brought in the final run of the frame to make it an 11-1 lead.
In the seventh, Xavier added two more to the lead after Wachsmann led off with a single, Canterberry was hit by a pitch, and Joe Karpierz singled to load the bases, with Anderson bringing in two runs with a single to make it a 13-1 lead.
Villanova picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh and added another in the ninth to set the final score at 13-3.

- JD Crisp got aboard with a walk, one of seven on the day for Xavier.
- Logan Schmidt went a season-long 7.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs, only one earned, on four hits, matching his season-high with six strikeouts without issuing a walk. Schmidt picked up the win, his second of the season.
- Jack DeTienne entered for the eighth, going the final 2.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out one and walking one.
