Men's Tennis Set For Three Road Matches this Weekend

Musketeers takes on Illinois, Northern Illinois and Northwestern this weekend
CINCINNATIÂ - Xavier men's tennis heads to Illinois for a trio of matches this weekend, starting with Illinois on Friday, January 30, set for a 1:30 p.m. ET start. The weekend continues with a match at Northern Illinois on Saturday, January 31, starting at 3:00 p.m. ET. The weekend wraps up on Sunday, February 1, when Xavier takes on Northwestern, set for a 11:00 a.m. ET start.

ILLINOIS
- Illinois is 1-2 on the season, falling to No. 7 Mississippi State and No. 13 Columbia before picking up a win over No. 23 Kentucky.
- The Illini went 15-12 last season with a 7-6 record in Big 10 play. Illinois took a win over No. 9 seed Oregon in the first round of the Big 10 Tournament before falling to No. 1 seed Ohio State in the Quarterfinals. The Illini earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, falling to No. 24 Oklahoma in the first round.
- The last time the two programs met was in 2010, a 4-0 win for the Illini.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS
- The Huskies are 2-0 after opening the season with wins over IU Indy and Illinois State.
- NIU went 8-15 last season, with a 1-9 record in MAC play.Â
- The two programs last met in 2024, a 6-1 win for the Huskies.
NORTHWESTERN
- Northwestern is 3-2 on the season, coming off three-straight wins, over Youngstown State, IU Indy and Cleveland State, after falling to Vanderbilt and Louisville during the opening weekend of the season. The Wildcats will travel to Alabama on Friday.
- NU went 12-17 last season, with a 4-9 record in Big 10 play, falling to No. 7 seed Michigan in the first round of the league tournament.
- This is the first match-up between the two programs.
LAST TIME OUT
- Xavier was last in action at Louisville on Wednesday, Jan. 21, falling 5-0 to the Cardinals.
- In doubles, Louisville picked up a 6-0 decision on the No. 3 court against Andrew Spurck and Kyle Totorica, then clinched the point with a 6-4 win on the No. 1 court against Alex Kotarski and Max Pettingell, facing the No. 59 ranked pair from Louisville.
- The Cardinals made it a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win on the No. 1 singles court against Nick Herdoiza, then lead 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lukas Grossman on the No. 6 court.
- A 6-2, 6-3 win against Max Pettingell on the No. 2 court for No. 122 Hamza El Amine clinched the match for the Cardinals, and UofL picked up the final decision, a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win on the No. 4 court against Bode Campbell to set the final score at 5-0.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
- The Musketeers travel to Richmond, Ky., on Saturday, Feb. 7, to take on Eastern Kentucky, set for a 5:00 p.m. start.
THE MUSKETEERS
- Xavier returns a trio from last year's squad that collected 10 wins and advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals, senior Kyle Totorica, and sophomores Alex Kotarski and Andrew Spurck.
- The Musketeers added three transfers to the roster, senior Samuel Frizelle, who transferred from Florida Southern, junior Nick Herdoiza, who comes to Xavier from Northwestern, and Max Pettingell, a redshirt-freshman coming from Auburn.
- Xavier also added a pair of freshmen to the roster, Bode Campbell, a four-star recruit out of Bloomington, Minn., and Lukas Grossman, a four-star from Atlanta.
