Leighton Schrand is in his second year as a graduate assistant. Schrand, a 2020 graduate of Xavier University with a degree in sports management, played in 26 games in four years with the Musketeers. Schrand spent his first two years at Xavier as a walk-on and earned a scholarship for his last two years. Schrand was awarded All-Conference, All-District, and All-Region honors as well as being a member of the 1,000 point club at Holy Cross High School in Covington, Kentucky.
“When you’re a walk-on you don’t have to show up to everything in the offseason, lifting, conditioning, workouts but he was always here,” said head coach Travis Steele. “You just respect the amount of work and sweat equity he has here at Xavier. Xavier means a lot to Leighton. I know Leighton really well. I know how hard he works, I know his loyalty, I know how intelligent he is, how much he cares about the players and how much he can help those guys. He knows our system. He knows our terminology; he knows how we do things and he can help those younger guys and new guys. He brings so much value to our program.”
Schrand’s responsibilities include assisting the coaching staff in limited on-court activities during practice, advance scouting, video, on-campus recruiting and some social media. In addition to his basketball duties, Schrand is pursuing a master’s degree in coaching education and athlete development.
