LEXINGTON, Ky. - In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Xavier could not continue the momentum gained in the first win of the season and fell to host Kentucky, 6-2. The Musketeers stumbled a little in the second inning and let UK jump out to a 5-1 lead and could not recover. The loss drops XU to 1-7 on the season, while Kentucky improves to 9-0 on the year.
Xavier lit up the scoreboard first as senior Jordan Wolf led off the game with a single up the middle. After stealing second, Wolf was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Pat Coffey before a single through the left side by Neil Lindgren gave XU the 1-0 advantage.
Sophomore Charlie Leesman would record three strikeouts in the home half of the first to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the second.
UK would finally get zoned in on the lefty in the bottom of the second. The Wildcats would go off for five runs on five hits in the inning to take the lead back, 5-1, after two complete. Four of the five Kentucky hits in the innings were for extra bases.
The Wildcats pushed across another run in the fifth and later allowed the Musketeers to score one more in the ninth to leave the score at 6-2.
Leesman suffered his first loss of the season and is now 0-1, while junior transfer Kyle Cowden threw five impressive innings in relief. Cowden would allow one run on six hits and struck out three.
At the plate the Musketeers were led by sophomore Neil Lindgren who recorded his second multi-hit game in a row. Lindgren finished 2-for-4 at the plate and had one of XU's two RBIs in the contest. Junior Tyler Aholt would also have a stellar game in his second start of the year. Aholt was also 2-for-4 at the plate and added his first career RBI in the final inning to drive in Andy Zellers.
The Musketeers take a day off before heading out for their annual spring trip through the Carolinas. Xavier will open its trip with a three-game set against No. 1 Vanderbilt this Friday. The opening pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon. The Blue and White will give junior Michael Lucas the nod on the hill, while the Commodores will send preseason All-American David Price.
