Musketeers outshot Bison 13-6, held 11-5 edge in corners
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No. 10 Xavier men's soccer dropped its first match of the season at Lipscomb on Thursday night, falling 2-1 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex despite holding a 13-6 edge in shots.
The Musketeers (2-1) had plenty of opportunities in the match, creating eight shots on frame and taking 11 corners – the most by XU since Oct. 19, 2012 at Duquesne – but struggling to convert after Alex Ridsdale's 21st minute penalty kick put the team up 1-0.
Ridsdale's tally was his third in three matches this season, giving the senior midfielder a team-leading six points.
Three minutes after Ridsdale's PK, however, Daniel Vieira created the equalizer for Lipscomb and snapped a season-opening 203:25 scoreless streak by the XU defense.
Ivan Alvarado then gave the Bison the lead in the 27th minute, launching a 25-yard shot from the top of the box to the upper 90.
Xavier threatened repeatedly in the match after Alvarado's goal, but so did the weather. Lightning was spotted in the area with 24 minutes remaining in the match, causing a half-hour delay and giving both sides a chance to regroup.
In the last 21 minutes of play, Xavier had three header chances off corner kicks but couldn't get one past Lipscomb keeper Micah Bledsoe – who made seven saves on the night.
For Lipscomb (1-2), it was the first win over a top-10 ranked team in program history.
Xavier returns home on Saturday, Sept. 5 to face ACC foe Virginia Tech at 7:00 p.m. ET.
