Farr's Double-Double Leads No. 2 Seed Xavier Over No. 15 Weber State

Musketeers move on to face No. 7 Wisconsin in the second round
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – James Farr's double-double helped the No. 2 seed Xavier Musketeers pick up a 71-53 win over No. 15 seed Weber State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. The Musketeers move on to face the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday evening at approximately 8:40 p.m. ET on TNT.
Farr led four Musketeers in double figures with 18 points and grabbed a game-high rebounds 15 for the double-double – his sixth of the season and second in a row.
Jalen Reynolds scored 12 on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. Remy Abell added 11 and Trevon Bluiett finished with 10.
Xavier took control of the game early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and the extending that advantage out to 15, 21-6, in the first 10 minutes of the game.
During a 13-0 run to build that lead, the Musketeers held Weber State scoreless for over five minutes. Kaiser Gates came off the bench to get seven points on 3-of-3 shooting in his first three minutes of action, helping Xavier build its advantage.
The Wildcats would get the lead down to single digits, 23-14, after four Xavier turnovers helped fuel an 8-2 run for WSU. Back-to-back baskets for Myles Davis ended the run, pushing the XU lead back to 13, 27-14, with five minutes remaining before halftime.
Weber State would get to within eight in the final seconds of the first half before a J.P. Macura three at the buzzer extended the Xavier lead back to 11, 34-23, at the break.
Farr led the Musketeers with eight points in the first half as the Musketeers hit on 40 percent of their shots, including 4-of-8 from outside the arc, while holding WSU to 27.6 percent and just 2-of-12 from outside.
Farr also led the team in rebounds, grabbing 11 before the break as Xavier owned a 29-17 advantage on the boards, including outrebounding the Wildcats 11-6 on the offensive boards for 14 second-chance points to just five for Weber State.
After the Wildcats scored the opening bucket of the second half, Xavier ripped of eight-straight points, including back-to-back threes from Abell and Bluiett, pushing the lead back to 15, 42-27.
Eight points in the first 15 minutes of the second half for Reynolds helped the Musketeers maintain an at least two possession lead, with the Wildcats keeping the lead to 11 or fewer until the final six minutes of the game when six-straight Musketeer points pushed the lead back to 15, 64-49, with 4:15 to play.
Xavier shot 60 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 48.4 percent for the game. Weber State finished shooting 38.6 percent from the field, including 4-of-21 from three, after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the second half.
Xavier finished with a 43-27 advantage on the boards, led by Farr's effort.
Xavier will face Wisconsin in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 20 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. The Musketeers and the Badgers are set to tip off on TNT following the game between Syracuse and Middle Tennessee which is set to begin at 6:10 p.m. ET.
