McLaughlin joins Xavier from Lipscomb, where he was a volunteer assistant
CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer has announced the addition of Garrett McLaughlin as an assistant coach, replacing Chuck Rodriguez – who departs for a similar role at Stanford.
McLaughlin joins the Musketeers from Lipscomb, where he had been in an assistant role since 2014. At Lipscomb, McLaughlin played an integral role in the team's training regimen, summer camps, compliance, expenses, travel and recruiting.
"First off I'd like to thank Chuck Rodriguez for three wonderful years and all the best as he grows his career," said head coach Andy Fleming. "He came here as an inexperienced coach and former rival of ours at Charlotte and left here as a talented, proven coach and a wonderful friend. He is forever part of the family and will be missed."
"The last several years we've been able to develop some of the nation's top young coaches and with Garrett I see a real diamond in the rough," said Fleming. "He comes from a Lipscomb program that has beaten us in each of the past two seasons, and two years ago enjoyed one of the top single season turnarounds in Division I. His past experiences working alongside John Michael Hayden gave him a two-year job interview of sorts, which will lead to a smooth transition and immediate chemistry within our assistants. A native Texan, Garrett played as a defender and is a put-your-head-down, tough, yes-sir type-of-guy which reflects the personality of our program well. I look for him to get his feet wet here in the final weeks of the spring and really help grow our already veteran backline next fall."
At Lipscomb, McLaughlin helped the Bison to a program-best 12-4-1 record and A-Sun regular season title in 2014. The Bison were 27-23-5 overall during his three years in Nashville, racking up several conference honors in the process. McLaughlin helped coach the 2014 A-Sun Defender of the Year, Luke Gearin, and the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Ivan Alvarado.
Lipscomb received multiple votes in the NSCAA Top 25 and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NSCAA Southeast Regional Poll during a landmark 2014 season.
Prior to his coaching stint at Lipscomb, McLaughlin spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, where he assisted in all areas of the program. He also brings multiple years of experience as a coach for the Tennessee Soccer Club.
A four-year starter at Lipscomb, McLaughlin graduated in 2011 with a B.S. in interdisiplinary studies after serving as team captain for three years. In 2014, he completed his M.A. in psychology while a part of the Bison coaching staff. He also holds a USSF National "E" License.
