Sophomore helped Xavier post first shutout of season on Saturday against DePaul
NEW YORK – Cory Brown was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, while teammate Majed Osman joined him on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Both were recognized after XU's league-opening, 1-0 win over DePaul on Saturday.
Brown quarterbacked a Xavier defense that picked up its first shutout of the season against the Blue Demons. The XU back four was up to the task against a potent DePaul attack, which came into the match in the top-10 nationally in goals scored. Brown was part of a team effort that held DePaul to just two shots total and zero on frame. On Tuesday, Brown and the Musketeers also held No. 13 Louisville below its season shot average – the Cardinals came in averaging 16 shots per match and the Musketeers held them to just nine attempts and four on frame.
Osman scored the game-winner, his first goal of season, on an 82nd minute penalty kick to seal Xavier's win over DePaul. The senior midfielder also led the team with seven shots and four on frame. In total, Osman had seven of team's 18 shots overall and four of six shots on goal last week.
