Xavier Baseball Clinches Spot in BIG EAST Tournament in Dominant 17-2 Win Over Georgetown
05.18.17 | Baseball
Bannon drives in five, Lowther goes six hitless as XU earns third trip to BIG EAST Tournament in four years
XU got another brilliant start from ace Zac Lowther, who didn't allow a hit in six innings, en route to officially clinching a spot in the four-team 2017 BIG EAST Tournament from May 25-28 in Omaha, Neb.
XU will look to defend its 2016 title at the event, which will be held at TD Ameritrade Park -- the home of the College World Series.
Xavier moved its record to 27-25 overall (8-6 BIG EAST), winning for the second straight time after snapping a seven-game road losing streak on Tuesday at home against Cincinnati. The Musketeers have scored 24 runs in those two victories and appear to be getting hot at the plate again at just the right time.
Georgetown dropped to 27-26 overall and 4-12, allowing its second-most runs of the season.

HOW XU SCORED |
SECOND INNING: Mitch Gallagher reached on a one out single up the middle, stealing second with two outs. After Matt Fallon walked, Ethan Schmidt hit a chopper to the left side and the Georgetown shortstop was wide on the throw to second. The throwing error brought home both baserunners, giving XU an early 2-0 lead.
THIRD INNING: Chris Givin doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning, moving to third on a fly ball by Conor Grammes. Rylan Bannon then brought Givin home with a sacrifice fly to center, making it 3-0.
FOURTH INNING: Nate Soria led off with a walk, going to third on a single through the right side by Matt Fallon. A walk by Ethan Schmidt then loaded the bases for Chris Givin, who lofted a fly ball to right to score Soria. Conor Grammes followed with another sacrifice fly, driving a ball to the warning track in left center and allowing Fallon to cross the plate. Batting next, Rylan Bannon crushed his 14th homer of the season to left to score two more and make it 7-0.
FIFTH INNING: A one out solo homer by Mitch Gallagher got XU on the board in the fifth and the inning continued with a two out rally as Matt Fallon singled up the middle and stole second. A walk by Ethan Schmidt and a single up the middle by Chris Givin brought Fallon around to make it 9-0. Conor Grammes then singled up the middle to bring Schmidt home and give XU a double-digit lead. Rylan Bannon batted next and tripled into the gap in right center to score Grammes and Givin.
SEVENTH INNING: Roger Danison led off with a pinch hit solo homer to left before five straight singles produced two more runs. With the bases loaded, Will LaRue grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice to make it 16-0. XU got its final run on a single through the left side by Mitch Gallagher, a rocket shot that careened off the shortstop and into left field.
